In the ≪莊子(Zhuangzi)≫, ‘因是’ is presented as one of the ways to escape the web of prejudice and right and wrong created by human cognition and language behavior. ‘因’ means ‘to follow as it is’, and refers to acceptance without any cognitive judgment or thought, while ‘是’ is right, good, capable, and further, the instinct of each thing that distinguishes it from others. Prejudice and right and wrong fuel conflict between the self and others. The crucial role of ‘因是’ is to block the prejudice and right and wrong that are the root causes of conflict, thereby fostering communication between the self and others, enabling both parties to achieve self-sufficiency. First, if the self reacts according to what the other likes and considers right, that is, if it can be ‘因是’, then both the self and the other can achieve harmonious communication, that is, ‘兩行’. Also, when we acknowledge the nature and instincts of others, we can communicate with them and form a single organism of ‘道’. ‘爲是’ is the rational, cognitive judgment and thought that is the source of prejudice and right and wrong, and is the opposite of ‘因是’. ‘爲是’, which appears four times in the <齊物論(Qiwulun)>, means not to accept and follow ‘是’ as it is, but to regard it as ‘是’ and create ‘是’.
