본 논문은 기후위기와 복합위기의 시대에 지역적 맥락과 다양한 삶의 방식을 배제하거나 주변화시켜 온 주류 지속가능성 패러다임의 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고, 이를 넘어서는 전환적 가능성으로서 다편적 비판지속가능성(pluriversal critical sustainabilities)을 탐구한다. 이에 본 연구는 (서구 중심의) 근대적·식민주의적 세계관에 기초하여 보편적이고 기술적인 해결책을 강조하는 기존의 지속가능성 담론을 극복하는 인식론적 전환의 토대로서 ‘다편세계(pluriverse)’론의 가능성에 주목하고 비서구 지역에 내재한 자율적 지식과 실천의 중요성을 강조한다. 특히 동남아시아 메콩 유역에서 전개된 토착생태지식 연구를 사례로 고찰하여, 현지 공동체가 지닌 생태사회적 지혜와 실천이 비판지속가능성 담론과 어떻게 공명하는지를 보여준다. 이러한 사례는 주류 패러다임을 극복하는 하나의 가능성으로서 현지 공동체 기반의 탈중심적 지식 생산이 지닌 의의를 부각하며, 다양한 세계와 존재 방식이 공존하는 지속가능한 미래를 상상하고 구성하는 데 기여할 수 있음을 시사한다. 궁극적으로 본 논문은 이러한 실천적 노력에 있어 동남아시아 지역연구의 역할을 강조함으로써, 복합위기 시대의 지속가능성 논의를 재구성하고, 보편적·단일적 해법이 아닌 다층적이고 협력적인 지식 생산의 필요성을 강조한다.
The paper explores ‘pluriversal critical sustainabilities’ as a transformative possibility by elucidating the pivotal role of Southeast Asian area studies to reconfigure sustainability debates amidst polycrisis. In doing so, the paper undertakes two tasks. Firstly, the study proposes a re-centring of those marginalised by the Eurocentric colonial modernity of the mainstream sustainability paradigm through the potential role of pluriversal area studies as an epistemological shift. This would re-centre the diversity of local contexts and ways of life that have frequently been excluded or marginalised. Secondly, the paper exemplifies the indigenous ecological knowledge research projects in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia, thereby highlighting the importance of de-centered pluriversal area studies. The case studies demonstrate how the ecological wisdom and practices of local communities resonate with critical sustainability discourse. Moreover, they demonstrate the importance of community-based and decentralised knowledge production as a means to imagine sustainable futures. As such, Southeast Asian studies have the potential to contribute in imagining ‘pluriversal critical sustainabilities’. By integrating decentralised practices and field-based knowledge, it can make a significant contribution through the continued documentation of evolving indigenous ecological knowledge in the context of climate breakdown. By taking this approach, it can also assist in mapping out pathways to sustainability that are capable of overcoming complex crises and are connected to a range of practices and perspectives.
