본고는 김애란의 「하루의 축」과 장류진의 「탐페레 공항」을 중심으로 문학적 공간으로서 공항이 지니는 특수성과 관계 형성의 가능성을 고찰하고자 한다. 기존 연구에서 공항은 주로 마르크 오제의 ‘비장소’ 개념에 기대어 익명성과 정체성의 부재, 관계의 단절을 상징하는 공간으로 해석되어 왔다. 그러나 본 연구는 이러한 관점에 비판적으로 접근하며, 두 작품에서 공항이 단순한 통과 지점이 아닌 정체성의 회복과 감정적 교류가 가능한 ‘특수 공간’으로 작용함을 밝힌다. 특히 「하루의 축」에서는 대규모 국제공항이라는 공간 속에서도 비언어적 소통을 통해 인간 간의 관계 형성이 이루어지는 양상이 섬세하게 포착되며, 「탐페레 공항」에서는 작고 낯선 공항이라는 공간에서의 우연한 만남이 인물의 정서적 변화를 유도하는 계기로 작용한다. 이를 통해 공항은 관계적 전환과 내면의 변화를 이끌어내는 문학적 실험의 장으로 재해석될 수 있으며, 이는 기존의 비장소 개념에 대한 새로운 해석 가능성을 제시한다.

This paper explores the spatial specificity of airports and the potential for relational dynamics within literary settings, focusing on Kim Ae-ran’s The Axis of a Day and Jang Ryu-jin’s Tampere Airport. Previous studies have often interpreted airports through Marc Auge’s concept of “non-place,” characterizing them as spaces marked by anonymity, the absence of identity, and relational disconnection. In contrast, this study critically reconsiders such a framework, demonstrating that in both texts, the airport serves not merely as a transient site but as a “special space” where emotional exchange and the recovery of identity become possible. In The Axis of a Day, the narrative captures the delicate formation of human connections through nonverbal communication within the context of a large international airport. Meanwhile, Tampere Airport portrays a small, unfamiliar airport where a chance encounter triggers the protagonist’s emotional transformation. These findings suggest that the airport can be reinterpreted as a literary site for relational shifts and inner change, thus offering a new perspective on the existing notion of non-place.
