본 논문은 『남원고사』의 형태서지학적 특징을 중심으로, 필사·제본·장정 방식을 실물 조사에 근거해 분석하고, 이를 통해 『남원고사』의 독자층을 새롭게 조명하고자 하였다. 『남원고사』는 프랑스 BULAC 도서관에 소장된 5권 5책 필사본으로, 청색 능화문 표지와 삼색실 제본, 궁체 필사, 들여쓰기 편집 등, 일반 세책본과 구별되는 고급장정과 독특한 편집·필사상의 특징을 보여준다. 또한 다양한 시가의 삽입과 확장된 서사, 그리고 한시 음과 한글 번역의 병기 등 교양 있는 상층 여성의 취향을 짐작하게 하는 내용적 특징도 분명히 확인된다. 이런 제반의 특성은 『남원고사』가 단순히 일반 대중을 위한 세책본이 아니라, 궁중 여성, 상층 교양인을 위한 맞춤형 세책본이었음을 의미한다. 『남원고사』가 18세기 후반부터 19세기 중반까지 세책 소설을 애독한 상층 여성층을 위해 별도로 제작된 것임을 처음으로 규명하였다. 이러한 형태서지학적 접근은 기존 『춘향전』 이본 연구와는 다른 관점에서 작품 이해의 지평을 확장하는 의의를 지닌다.

This study analyzes the analytical bibliographic characteristics of Namwŏnkosa, focusing on its manuscript format, binding, and book decoration, based on physical examination of the extant copies. Through this analysis, the study aims to shed new light on the readership of Namwŏnkosa. Namwŏnkosa is a five-volume, five-book manuscript housed at BULAC (Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations) in France. It features a refined design and distinctive bibliographic elements, including a blue silk cover with floral patterns, tricolored thread binding, calligraphy in palace-style script (gungche), and meticulously edited formatting with indents―all of which set it apart from typical rental books (sechaekbon). The text also contains inserted lyrical passages, an expanded narrative, and side-by-side presentation of classical Chinese poems (hanmun) and their Korean translations in Hangul. These features suggest that the work was intended for cultured upper-class female readers. Such bibliographic and expressive characteristics indicate that Namwŏnkosa was not merely a mass-market rental book, but a customized edition targeting women of the royal court or the educated elite. Its physical form serves as valuable evidence of the kind of rental books produced for upper-class female readers who avidly consumed fiction from the late 18th to mid-19th century. This bibliographical approach offers a new perspective distinct from existing studies of Chunhyangjeon variants and broadens our understanding of the work and its cultural context.
