이 글은 울주 천전리 각석 명문 중 금랑명을 겸토한 것이다. 본 명문을 통해 알 수 있는 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 금랑명은 기존에 “金郎□行碧□”(1행 6자)라고 판독하였으나, □는 다른 글자와 달리 외줄이고, 낙서라고 볼 수 있으므로 원래의 명문은 “金郎␣行碧□”(1행 5자)라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 行碧은 인명이다. 그 근거는 세 가지인데, 하나는 □의 의미에서 찾을 수 있다. □는 行의 이체자로서 본자를 쓰면 ‘行碧行’이 되어 문장이 어색하다. 또 하나는 금랑과 행벽 사이에 띄어쓰기를 주목할 수 있다. 인명사이에 띄어쓰기는 서석곡에서 찾을 수 있다. 또한 서석곡뿐만 아니라 점말동굴과 성류굴의 명문을 볼 때, □앞에는 인명이 자리했다. 셋째, 금랑은 화랑이다. 그 근거는 방문지가 화랑의 수련처·유오지의 하나라는 점, 인칭접미사 郞이 붙고, 화랑의 호칭에서 보이는 약칭이라는 점을 들 수 있다. 이를 통해 금랑이라는 화랑의 존재를 확인할 수 있었고, 금랑과 [180]명의 金仔郞의 관련성은 앞으로의 숙제도 남긴다. 넷째, 금랑명은 금랑과 행벽 2인의 방문 기록이다. 방문 이유는 알 수 없고, 금랑명의 刻者는 ‘금랑’이라는 존칭의 뜻이 담긴 약칭임을 볼 때, 금랑본인은 아니고, 동행인 행벽일 수 있다. 金郎은 화랑이고, 刻者가 행벽이라면, 그의 출신은 화랑 금랑의 낭도이거나, 어울렸던 승려였을 개연성이 있다. 다섯째, 작성 시기는 중대 이후일 개연성이 있다. 서석곡의 명문이 시간적으로 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로 가면서 작성되고, 郞의 이체자 ‘郎’, 그리고 ‘□’가 중대의 명문에서 많이 보이기 때문이다.
