본고는 『생명의료윤리 원칙들』(8판, 2019)의 공통 도덕 행위자가 누구인지를 해명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저, 뷰첨과 칠드레스가 『생명의료윤리 원칙들』 8판에서 공통도덕의 행위자를 규정한 핵심 문구인 “도덕에 헌신된 모든 사람들”을 세 가지 구성 요소, 즉 ‘도덕(morality)’, ‘헌신된(committed to)’, 그리고 ‘모든 사람들(all persons)’로 나누어 그 각각의 의미와 함의를 심층적으로 분석한다. 이 과정에서 각 요소가 지닌 복합적인 의미를 명확히 하고자 앨런 도나건(Alan Donagan)의 공통 도덕 이론과의 유비적 검토를 시도할 것이다. 다음으로 이렇게 분석된 ‘도덕에 헌신된 모든 사람들’이라는 행위자 규정이 또한 생명의료 영역에서 누구를 지시하는지에 대한 구체성이 결여되어 있음을 제시하고, 『생명의료윤리 원칙들』 이론 체계의 4원칙(자율성 존중 원칙, 해악 금지 원칙, 선행 원칙, 정의 원칙) 안에서 공통 도덕의 행위자들이 구체적으로 어떠한 위상을 지니고 있는지를 재구성하고자 한다.

This paper aims to elucidate the identity of the moral agent of common morality as presented in the 8th edition of Principles of Biomedical Ethics (PBE) (2019). To this end, it begins by dissecting the key formulation used by Beauchamp and Childress to define this agent―“all persons committed to morality”―into its three constituent elements: ‘morality,’ ‘committed to,’ and ‘all persons.’ The paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the meanings and implications of each element, employing an analogical review of Alan Donagan’s theory of common morality to clarify their complex nature further. Subsequently, the paper argues that this analyzed definition of the agent, while foundational, lacks the specificity required to designate who these agents are in the concrete domain of biomedical ethics. The main purpose of this paper is, therefore, to reconstruct the specific stature and functions of the agent of common morality within the theoretical framework of PBE’s four principles: the principle of respect for autonomy, the principle of nonmaleficence, the principle of beneficence, and the principle of justice.
