Liu Zongyuan(柳宗元) achieved success in both poetry and prose, and he was particularly influential in works related to the nature, building upon previous eras and paving the way for future generations. His travelogues are highly praised for their descriptive prowess, often characterized by the merging of emotion and scenery and a poetic, painterly quality. He excelled at transforming his sensory experiences ― what he saw, heard, and felt―into vivid imagery. This sensory and poetic aspect can be said to have a cognitive impact on readers.
In cognitive linguistics, poetry has its own independent field of study called cognitive poetics. However, prose, which primarily focuses on conveying facts and logic, still lacks sufficient research from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Therefore, this paper attempts a preliminary analysis and understanding of Liu Zongyuan's "Yongzhou Baji(永州八記)" by applying cognitive linguistic concepts.
First, I aim to demonstrate the cognitive characteristics of nature travelogues by examining their origins and aesthetic aspects.
Next, I will analyze Liu Zongyuan's "Yongzhou Baji" using cognitive linguistic concepts such as figure-ground theory, conceptual blending of images, and the travel script interpretive method. Finally, I will explore how these concepts can be re-presented using AI programs.
In short, interpreting a text cognitively allows us to approach the author's original meaning(or intent) as closely as possible. Modern AI technology operates quite cognitively. In this sense, when Liu Zongyuan's writings are reproduced as images using AI, it helps explain how vividly he expressed himself both sensually and cognitively. However, the cognitive interpretation and research of the prose genre are still significantly lacking compared to other genres like poetry or novels. Therefore, we hope to see much more research and attempts in this area in the future.
