트럼프의 시대가 귀환하였다. 인종 연구의 역사가 지워지고 있다. 그것은 여러 가지로 이해할 만하다. 역사가들이 자주 사용하는 이른바 “백래시”라고 부르는 반발운동이 일어나고 있다. 트럼프는 이러한 국민들의 감정을 파고 들고 있다. 모든 전체주의자들은 최고의 심리분석가들이다. 그리고 그들은 또한 환원주의자이다. 그런 사회와 국민의 정신적인 풍경을 제대로 이해하는 경우에서 위대한 사회과학자이고 처방에서는 더더욱 그렇다. 그런 차원에서 미국의 경우에서는 사회적인 강박관념의 처방을 준비한 이 시대의 인물이 가진 전국적인 호응도가 결코 쉽게 사라지지 않는 것이다. 그런 그가 국민주의적 역사를 불러일으키면서 한 선동적인 연설은 국민들을 호응하고 있고 이제 미국은 지금까지 역사의 화각을 넓히는 그 위대한 인종의 역사를 다시 지우는 작업으로 돌진하고 있다. 그러나 지난 약 반 세기의 인종 연구의 역사를 정리하면서 이 나라 국민주의의 위대한 발자취를 찾아보는 것이 인종의 공부에도 가능한 점을 확인 할 수 있었다. 인종 연구가 국민주의 역사와 대치되는 경우가 아니었다. 인종의 역사를 위대한 이 나라의 국민주의 역사를 조망하는 가장 열린 공부이고 반성의 공부이며 미래의 국민주의 방향성을 결정할 수도 있는 최고의 조망이 될 수 있는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 구체적으로 말해서 미국의 국민주의 성과에서 이른바 인종주의가 가진 거룩한 동화주의, 성과주의만을 고려해서 그런 말을 던지는 것은 아니다. 본 글에서 특히 강조하였듯이 인종을 통한 최근까지의 트랜스내셔널 역사에서는 전 세계를 연결할 국가의 인적 역량의 네트워크를 확인할 수 있는 것이다. 그 어떤 나라의 역사와도 비교할 수 없는 거대한 세계사의 저력을 확인 할 수 있을 것이다. 미국인이 분명 세계의 국민이고 세계의 국민이 이 나라를 만들고 있다는 그 위대한 지구촌의 역사를 만들어내고 세계인의 평화, 세계인의 자유와 평등의 신장됨을 기여 보필하는 거룩한 진보의 역사를 보여주고 있다. 충분히 이 분야의 공부가 자랑스런 국민주의 역사로 치환할 수 있다는 것이다. 시야를 넓혀서 보면 이와 같은 경험을 가진 역사가 미국의 범국민주의 역사로 세울 수 있는 것이라는 점을 이제 백악관의 주인이 알 필요가 있다는 것이다.

In reviewing the history of American Black and Indian History and Historiography over the past half- century or so, it is possible to find great footsteps of this country's nationalism in the study of race. It is not the case that critical race-oriented history as intersectionality is antithetical to nationalist history. It is the case that the history of race is the most open and reflective study of the history of nationalism in this great country and the best lens through which to view the future direction of nationalism. Specifically, I say this not only in light of the holy assimilationist’s performativism of so-called racism in the performance of American nationalism. As emphasized in this essay, the recent transnational history of race reveals a network of national human capacities that connect the world. No single nation's history is comparable to that of the world. The history of the United States is a history of holy progress, of contributing to the peace of the world and the growth of freedom and equality of people of the world, of making the great global history that Americans are people of the world and that people of the world are making this country. Suffice to say, the study of this volume can be transformed into a history of American pride and nationalism. It is time for the occupant of the White House to recognize that a history of this kind of experience can be carved into a history of American universal nationalism. I dare say that these are scenes from the nationalist history of this country, seen from the perspective of a “local” across the Pacific Ocean.
