본 연구는 중세 시대부터 시작된 콘트라팍툼(Contrafactum) 기법이 교회음악의 변화와 발전에 어떤 영향을 주었는지에 대해 다룬다. 중세 말기와 르네상스 시대에 교회음악 안에 세속적인 멜로디가 유입된 배경과, 이를 통해 모테트(Motet)와 패러디 미사(Parody Missa) 같은 다양한 형태의 음악이 탄생하게 된 과정을 살펴봄으로써 콘트라팍툼의 역사적 의의를 규명한다. 특히, 종교개혁 시기의 마틴 루터(Martin Luther)와 가톨릭교회의 트렌트 공의회(Council of Trent)를 중심으로 콘트라팍툼에 대한 상반된 수용 태도를 비교하여 교회음악이 가지는 거룩함과 대중성 사이의 긴장 관계를 고찰할 것이다. 나아가 현대 교회음악에서는 세속적인 멜로디를 활용하여 교회음악으로 새롭게 표현되는 경향이 나타나고 있으며, 이는 콘트라팍툼 기법이 현재 사회에서도 중요한 역할하고 있음을 보여준다. 그러나, 이러한 현대 교회음악이 대중성을 갖게 되면서 예배의 정체성과 경건성이 훼손될 수 있다는 논쟁을 초래한다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 교회음악이 단순히 음악만을 선택하는 것뿐만 아니라 신학적 통찰력이 필요하다는 점을 강조하고 있으며 교회음악이 가진 본연의 기능인 하나님께 드리는 예배와 신앙 공동체의 영적 성숙을 어떻게 다양한 문화적 맥락 속에서 지속적으로 실현할 수 있는지 탐구하며, 교회음악의 미래를 위한 실천적 시사점을 제시하고자 한다.

This study explores how the technique of contrafactum, which originated in the Middle Ages, influenced the transformation and development of church music. The historical significance of contrafactum is explored by examining the introduction of secular melodies into church music during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and how this led to the creation of various forms of music such as the Motet and Parody Missa. In particular, I will examine the tension between holiness and popularity in church music by comparing the contrasting reception of contrafactum by Martin Luther and the Catholic Church at the Council of Trent. Furthermore, there is a trend in contemporary church music to utilize secular melodies to create new expressions in church music, which shows that the contrafactum technique plays an important role in current society. However, this popularization of contemporary church music raises the debate that the identity and reverence of worship may be compromised. Ultimately, this study emphasizes that church music requires theological insights, not just musical choices, and explores how church music can continue to fulfill its primary function of worship to God and spiritual growth of the faith community in a variety of cultural contexts, and offers practical implications for the future of church music.
