본 연구는 연극 《띨뿌리》에서 나타나는 소리의 수행성을 분석한다. 《띨뿌리》는 2023년 대학로 예술극장대극장에서 공연된 작품으로, 제44회 서울연극제에서 대상을 포함한 여러 부문을 수상하며 주목받았다. 이 작품은 매향리 폭격 훈련장의 실화를 바탕으로 하여, 특히, 폭격음과 전투기 소리를 중심으로 연극적 수행성을 창출한 점에서 의미가 크다. 구태환 연출은 무대와 음향 디자인을 활용해 관객이 소리를 몸으로 체험하도록 만들었다. 극장 내 다양한 위치에 스피커를 배치하여 소리의 방향성과 공간감을 극대화하였으며, 배우들의 발화방식, 무대 위 현장의 소리, 음향 효과 등이 복합적으로 얽히면서 소리의 물질성을 강조했다. 연극에서 소리는 단순한 의미 전달을 넘어 공간을 창출하고 수행성을 갖는 요소로 작용한다. 미디어와 기술을 통해 시각적 형태로 변환되기도 하며, 연출가는 이를 활용하여 관객의 감각을 확장하는 피드백 고리를 형성한다. 《띨뿌리》에서도 폭격 소리는 단순한 효과음이 아니라, 관객의 몸과 감각을 자극하여 공간을 체험하게 만드는 요소로 작용했다. 즉, 소리는 공연에서 시간과 공간을 생성하며, 관객과 배우 간의 수행적 관계를 형성하는 핵심 매체이다. 본 연구는 《띨뿌리》에서 나타나는 소리의 수행성을 분석함으로써, 현대 연극에서 소리가 단순한 보조적 요소가 아니라 공연의 핵심적인 의미 생성 장치로 기능할 수 있음을 조명하고자 한다. 이를 통해 공연예술에서 소리의 역할과 가능성을 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

This study analyzes the performativity of sound in the play《Ddilpuri》. 《Ddilpuri》was staged at the Daehakro Arts Theater in 2023 and garnered significant attention by winning multiple awards, including the Grand Prize at the 44th Seoul Theater Festival. Based on the real-life events of the Maehyang-ri bombing range, the play is particularly significant in its creation of theatrical performativity through the use of bombing and jet engine sounds. Director Koo Tae-hwan utilized stage and sound design to enable the audience to physically experience sound. By strategically placing speakers throughout the theater, the production maximized the directionality and spatial perception of sound. Additionally, the interplay of actors’ vocal delivery, onstage live sounds, and sound effects emphasized the materiality of sound. In theater, sound functions not only as a medium for conveying meaning but also as a performative element that constructs space. Through media and technology, sound can be transformed into visual forms, and directors use these elements to create sensory feedback loops that enhance audience perception. In 《Ddilpuri》, bombing sounds were not merely effects but rather stimuli that engaged the audience’s body and senses, enabling them to experience space. In this way, sound generates time and space in performance and serves as a crucial medium for shaping the performative relationship between actors and the audience. By analyzing the performativity of sound in 《Ddilpuri》, this study highlights how sound functions as a central meaning-making device in contemporary theater rather than merely serving as a supplementary element. Through this analysis, the study aims to contribute to expanding the role and potential of sound in performing arts.
