스포츠철학에서는 경기 행위들의 타당성 혹은 정당성을 뒷받침하는 규칙 및 원리의 근거에 대한 이론으로서 형식주의(formalism), 폭넓은 내재주의(Broad Internalism, BI), 심층 관습주의(Deep Conventionalism, DC) 등이 제시된다. 이 논문의 목적은 축구 경기 전방 압박 강도의 지표인 ‘수비 행동당 허용 패스’(Passes Per Defensive Action, PPDA)를 철학적 시각에서 바라봄으로써 스포츠 분석의 이론적 기반을 확장하는 동시에, 다양한 리그 데이터를 활용하여 전술적 통찰력을 도출하려는 시도이다. 이를 위해 PPDA를 활용한 리그별 전방 압박 강도를 나타내는 지표를 비교 분석 했으며, 그 결과를 스포츠 철학적인 관점에서 조명해 보고자 하였다. 먼저 PPDA를 팀의 전방 압박 강도를 나타내는 지표로 사용하는 경우, 영국 프리미어리그의 PPDA가 다른 리그에 비해 높게 나타나고 있음을 수치상으로 볼 수 있으며, 또한 Morgan이 주창한 DC의 시각에서 바라보는 PPDA의 분석을 통하여 영국 스포츠 수행 방식이 그들의 전통적인 ‘비공식적이고 암묵적인 관습’에 영향을 받고 있기에 다른 리그보다 PPDA가 높다는 것을 수치상으로 확인할 수 있게 해준다. 그러나 PPDA에 의존하는 분석은 ‘압박 의도’한계, ‘압박 행동’ 한계, ‘압박 설정’ 한계 와 같은 제한점이 존재한다. 본 연구는 이러한 한계들이 스포츠철학 이론의 관점에서 어떻게 다루어질 수 있는지 탐구하며, 형식주의 및 BI가 PPDA가 지닌 한계 중 오직 일부만을 다룰 수 있음에 반하여 DC는 PPDA의 세 가지 한계 모두를 다룰 수 있는 적절한 해석할 수 있음을 제시한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 스포츠 철학적 시각에서 PPDA를 바라보는 새로운 해석을 제공하며, 스포츠철학 담론의 폭이 확장되었다는 측면에서, 그리고 스포츠철학 분석에 새로운 통찰을 제공했다는 측면에서 의의를 갖는다.
In sports philosophy, theories such as Formalism, Broad Internalism (BI), and Deep Conventionalism (DC) provide the foundation for evaluating the validity and legitimacy of actions within a game. The purpose of this study is to examine the defensive pressure intensity indicator, Passes Per Defensive Action (PPDA), from a philosophical perspective, thereby expanding the theoretical foundation of sports analysis while deriving tactical insights through the analysis of various league datasets. To achieve this, PPDA was utilized through a ports philosophical lens. The findings indicate that English Premier League (EPL) exhibits higher PPDA compared to other leagues. From the perspective of DC, as proposed by Morgan, this trend can be interpreted as a reflection of the EPL’s deeply ingrained ‘informal and implicit conventions’ shaping its sporting practices. However, reliance on PPDA as an analytical metric presents limitations related to the ‘intent of pressing’, the ‘act of pressing’, and the ‘setting of pressing’. While Formalism and BI address only certain aspects of these limitations, DC provides a more comprehensive interpretation that encompasses all three. This study contributes to the expansion of sports philosophy discourse by offering a novel interpretation of PPDA, thereby providing new theoretical insights into sports analysis.
