최근 존 듀이의 실용주의에 대한 국제적 관심이 교육을 넘어 철학, 예술, 디자인 등 다양한 학문 분야로 확장되고 있다. 특히 해외 연구자들은 듀이의 일본 및 중국 방문(1919-1921)과 이 시기에 저술된 『철학의 재구성』(1920), 『경험과 자연』(1925), 『중국과 일본에서 보낸 편지들』(1920)을 재조명하며, 그의 사상이 현대적 맥락에서 갖는 의미를 탐구하고 있다. 본 연구는 최근 해외 디자인학에서 듀이 실용주의를 적용하여 디자인 연구의 인식론적 한계를 보완하려는 사례를 검토하고, 이에 관한 국내외 연구 동향을 분석한다. 특히, 영국의 디자인 연구자 브라이언 딕슨이 제안한 ‘듀이식 디자인을 통한 철학’ 개념을 분석하며, 듀이의 실용주의적 지식 탐구 방식이 디자인학의 학문적 토대를 강화하는 과정을 고찰한다. 나아가, 한국 디자인학의 인식론적 접근 방식으로서 조선 실학과의 융합적 연구 가능성을 시론적으로 제안한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본 연구는 다가오는 불확실성의 시대에 대응하는 다원적이고 융합적인 디자인 연구방법론을 모색하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

In recent years, international interest in John Dewey's pragmatism has extended beyond education to fields such as philosophy, art, and design. Scholars have revisited Dewey's visits to Japan and China (1919-1921) and his works from this period, including Reconstruction in Philosophy(1920) and Experience and Nature(1925), to explore their contemporary relevance. This study examines how Dewey’s pragmatism has been applied to address epistemological challenges in design research, analyzing global and domestic trends. In particular, it investigates Brian S. Dixon’s concept of “Deweyan Philosophy-Through-Design” and how Dewey’s inquiry-based approach strengthens design studies. Additionally, it explores the potential integration of Joseon Silhak as an epistemological framework in Korean design research. By doing so, this study contributes to the development of pluralistic and integrative methodologies for future design research.
