이 논문은 훼절 모티프를 (毁節) 담고 있는 세태소설인 <지봉전>, <정향전>, <종옥전>, <오유란전>에 주목하여, 이들 작품의 공통된 문제의식을 새롭게 조명한다. 기존에는 이러한 작품들이 위선적인 상층 남성을 풍자하며 갈등 관계를 드러내는 데 초점을 맞춘 것으로 이해되었으나, 논문은 상층 남성이 지방과 지방 사람들에 대해 지녔던 편견과 오만을 스스로 반성하도록 이끄는 과정을 통해 지역, 신분, 성별을 넘어 화합을 추구하는 데 그 의의가 있음을 밝힌다. 세태소설은 화합과 대동의 가치를 지향하며, 양반 남성의 훼절 사건으로 드러나는 신분 불평등은 이러한 가치를 구현하기 위해 설정된 갈등의 장치로 볼 수 있다. 세태소설의 서사를 이러한 관점에서 재해석하면, 그동안 간과되어 온 또 다른 갈등 구도가 드러난다. 그것은 바로 경향(京鄕)에 대한 차별적 시선이다. 대부분의 세태소설은 지방을 서울과 대조되는 공간으로 설정하며, 서울 사람들을 주인공으로 등장시킨다. 지방과 지방 사람들은 서울 사람들의 좁은 시야를 유쾌하게 확장시키는 역할을 하며, 이를 통해 교류와 소통을 지향한다. 특히 세태소설이 경험적 사실을 바탕으로 향유되었을 가능성이 높다는 점에서, 지방 사람들이 보여주는 이러한 태도는 과거 서울 이외의 전국 각지 백성들이 넓은 아량으로 서울 사람들을 포용하며 큰 틀에서의 화합을 꿈꾸었다는 사실을 보여주는 증거로 해석할 수 있다.
This study focuses on the motif of hwejeol (毁節, loss of integrity) in the social novels Jibongjeon, Jeonghyangjeon, Jongokjeon, and Oyuranjeon, offering a fresh perspective on their shared themes. While these works have traditionally been understood as satirical critiques of the hypocrisy of the upper-class male elite, this paper argues that their core concern lies in encouraging self-reflection among these elite figures. By confronting their prejudices and arrogance toward provincial regions and people, the novels ultimately seek to promote harmony across regional, social, and gender boundaries. Social novels aim to uphold the values of harmony and unity (daedong, 大同), with the hwejeol incidents of aristocratic men serving as narrative devices to expose and address social inequality. Reinterpreting their narrative structures from this perspective reveals an overlooked dimension of conflict―namely, the discriminatory attitudes toward the provinces by those in the capital (gyeonghyang, 京鄕). Most social novels set their stories in provincial areas, contrasting them with the capital, and portray the capital’s residents as the protagonists. The provincial characters, in turn, broaden the narrow perspectives of the capital’s elite in a lighthearted manner, fostering interaction and communication between these regions. Given that social novels were likely rooted in empirical realities, the attitudes displayed by provincial characters can be seen as reflecting a historical context in which the people outside the capital embraced those in Seoul with magnanimity, aspiring to a larger vision of national unity and reconciliation.
