19세기 말∼20세기 초 서천 지역어에서 ‘ㅔ[e], ㅐ[ε], ㅚ[ö]’, ‘ㅟ[ü]’는 단모음화가 이루어졌으나, ‘ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅚ’와 ‘ㅟ’는 단모음화의 시기와 그 정도에서 차이를 보인다. ‘ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅚ’에 비해 ‘ㅟ’의 단모음화가 상대적으로 늦게 이루어진 것은 ‘ㅗ, ㅜ’의 음가 변화에 따른 것으로, 이는 이들이 이중모음으로 실현되었다는 점과 핵모음이 음가 변화를 겪었다는 점과 관련된다. 이에 보다 후대 자료인 ≪한국방언자료집-서천≫의 고모음화 현상과 원순모음화 현상의 실현 양상을 통해, ‘ㅗ, ㅜ’의 음가 변화 가능성을 확인해 보았다. ≪초학요선≫과 ≪한자용법≫에 비해 ≪한국방언자료집≫에서 ‘ㅗ→ㅜ’ 고모음화 현상이 활발하게 실현됨을 보이는데, 원순모음화와 비원순모음화의 실현 양상을 통해 ‘ㅜ’가 비교적 후대까지 음가가 변화를 겪고 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있다.

‘ㅔ[e], ㅐ[ε], ㅚ[ö], ㅟ[ü]’ in Seocheon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were monophthongized, but ‘ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅚ’ and ‘ㅟ’ differ in the timing and extent of monophthongization. The relatively late monophthongization of ‘ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅚ’ compared to ‘ㅟ’ was due to the change of vowel phonetic value(‘ㅗ, ㅜ’). Originally, ‘ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅚ, ㅟ’ was diphthong. And diphthong’s nuclear vowel suffered the change of vowel phonetic value. Therefore, high-vowelization and unrounding were analyzed in the Korean Dialect Sourcebook. Based on the results, the change of vowel phonetic value of ‘ㅗ, ㅜ’ was confirmed. Compared to Chohakyoseon and Hanja Yongbeop, the ‘ㅗ → ㅜ’ high-vowelization was actively realized in the Korean Dialect Sourcebook, and it can be confirmed that the phonetic value of ‘ㅜ[u]’ through the realization of vowel rounding. And this means that ‘ㅗ, ㅜ’ is becoming a modern Vowel System of mid-vowel and high-vowel.
