Digitalization is prevalent in Korea. IOT will notify the shipper about the condition of its cargo during carriage. Digital freight forwarders may play a significant role as carriers. Online platforms enable shippers to contract directly with carriers.
The Korea Commercial Code (KCC) has provisions for engaging in e-B/L (electronic Bill of Lading). The e-B/L is valid only when issued and assigned through a title registry approved by the Korean government. However, there are open-type e-B/Ls. Therefore, the Korean government-approved registry does not function correctly. Foreign companies are hesitant to enter the Korean title registry. Article 862 of KCC need be revised to better reflect the Korean situation.
