Language serves not only as a tool for conveying information but also as a means to express intentions, attitudes, and social relationships. This study explores the nuanced ways in which speakers’ intentions and attitudes towards listeners manifest through the usage of English tenses and pronouns. Speakers have the capacity to voluntarily engage with listeners, immersing themselves in a shared space that fosters a sense of unity and oneness through the use of ‘we’ and ‘our’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘my.’ They also use the word ‘you’ generically to refer to the general public, allowing them to observe current events and situations from a collective perspective. Additionally, speakers strategically employ past and present tenses to convey humility and modesty, as well as to enhance the vividness of their narratives and accounts of current events. By skillfully manipulating tenses and personal pronouns, speakers can eflbctively communicate their intentions and attitudes. (Keimyung University)
