그동안의 조선 시대 일기 연구와 관련해서 일기 혹은 일기문학 전체를 조망할 수 있는 문제의식의 제기, 주요하고 핵심적인 논점의 발견 등이 충분하게 이루어지지 못했다. 개별 자료의 발굴과 연구를 넘어서서 일기, 일기문학 전체를 거시적으로 포괄하면서 논의가 진행될 필요가 있다. 첫째, 일기문학의 특질, 성격 등에 관한 기존 연구 성과를 바탕으로 하면서 일기문학의 특질, 인접 장르(예컨대 자서전 등)와의 변별점, 일기문학의 독특한 글쓰기 방식과 표현 방식 등에 대한 논의가 새롭게 진행될 필요가 있다. 둘째, 그동안 연구 대상이 제한적이었고, 남성과 여성, 한글과 한문 일기를 포괄한 연구가 제대로 진행되지 못했다. 조선후기 일기문학은 한글일기와 한문일기, 남성일기와 여성일기를 포괄하여 전체적으로 조망할 때 일기문학의 특질, 역사적 전개과정이 선명하게 드러날 수 있다. 셋째, 동아시아 일기문학의 비교 연구가 활발하게 진행되지 못했다. 기존 연구에서는 동아시아 일기문학의 전통 속에서 한일 일기문학이 지닌 특질을 비교 연구하는 성과가 충분하게 이루어지지 못했다. 이 논문에서는 조선시대 일기 연구의 방법론적 모색과 관련하여 일기 전체를 포괄적인 시야에 넣고 앞으로의 연구에서 주요하게 다루어야 할 몇 가지 논점에 대해 생각해 보았으며, 홍용한의 한문일기 「화성행행일기」와 이희평의 한글일기 「화성일기」를 주대상으로 삼아 한문일기와 한글일기의 차이점에 대해 살펴보았다. 일기의 작가층, 독자, 이야기로서의 표현방법, 시간인식, 주된 소재 등의 측면을 고려하여 한문과 한글 일기의 차이점을 대비적으로 구명하고자 했다. 물론 한문일기와 한글일기가 서로 대립적으로만 이해될 성질의 것은 아니다. 공통된 특성과 성향을 공유하기도 하고 서로 영향을 주고받기도 하면서 조선시대 문학사의 변화가 이루어졌다.

Research on the diaries of the Joseon Dynasty has not sufficiently raised awareness of overarching issues or identified the key themes that could provide a comprehensive understanding of diary literature as a whole. Beyond studying and analyzing individual materials, it is necessary to approach the entire body of diaries and related literature on a broader scale. First, there is a need to engage in new discussions about the unique characteristics of diary literature, distinguishing it from adjacent genres such as autobiography, and exploring its distinct narrative and expressive techniques. This should build upon previous research that has examined the defining features of diary literature. Second, research subjects have been limited in scope, with insufficient studies that encompass both male and female writers, as well as Korean and Chinese diaries. Viewing the diary literature of the late Joseon Dynasty holistically - including Korean and Chinese diaries written by both men and women - can illuminate the literary characteristics and historical evolution of diary literature more clearly. Third, comparative studies on East Asian diary literature have been scarce. Current research has yet to fully examine the similarities and differences between Korean and Japanese diary traditions within the East Asian literary context. This paper addresses methodological approaches to studying Joseon Dynasty diaries, aiming to place these works in a comprehensive framework and identify significant research themes for the future. Focusing on Hong Yonghan’s Hwaseonghaenghaengilgi (Chinese diary) and Lee Huipyeong’s Hwaseongilgi (Korean diary), it explores differences in authorship, readership, narrative techniques, perceptions of time, and subject matter. The study seeks to comparatively analyze the distinctions between diaries written in Chinese characters and those written in Korean script.
