묻지마 범죄가 범죄의 원인이 없는 것처럼 현상을 왜곡하여 불필요한 범죄두려움을 불러일으킨다는 주장이 제기되자, 묻지마 범죄 현상을 지칭하는 정확한 용어를 모색함에 이르렀다. 그러나 아직도 묻지마 범죄 현상을 지칭하는 용어가 혼재되어 사용되고 있다. 용어 사용이 사회적 합의에 이르기 위해서는 해당 용어가 포괄하는 있는 의미에 관해 살펴보는 것이 선행되어야 한다. 이 연구는 묻지마 범죄 현상에 대한 개념을 수립하기 위한 첫 단계로서 시민의 인식을 확인하였다. 300명의 참가자는 ‘묻지마 범죄’, ‘이상동기 범죄’, ‘무차별 범죄’ 중 한 가지 조건에 무선할당 되어, 각 조건과 부합하는 범죄 특성에 관하여 응답하였다. 연구 결과, 범행 동기에 있어 범죄 명칭에 따른 응답자들의 인식 차이는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 한편, 범행 도구, 가ㆍ피해자의 관계, 그리고 범행 장소에 있어서 이상동기 범죄가 묻지마 범죄와 무차별범죄보다 덜 부합하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구에서 탐색한 묻지마 범죄 현상은 비면식 관계의 피해자를 대상으로 흉기를 사용하여 발생하는 대인 폭력범죄로 확인되었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 묻지마 범죄 현상의 일반적인 구성개념을 논의하였다.

As the term ‘Mudjima Crimes’ has been criticized for distorting the phenomenon by implying a lack of criminal motive, thereby causing unnecessary fear of crime, there has been a search for a more accurate term to describe such crimes. However, terminology referring to the phenomenon of Mudjima crime is still used interchangeably. For a term to reach social consensus, it is necessary to first examine the meaning it encompasses. Therefore, this study aimed to identify citizens' perceptions as a first step in establishing the concept of Mudjima crimes. Three hundred participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: ‘mudjima crimes’, ‘abnormal motive crimes’, or ‘random crimes’, and responded to the characteristics of crimes corresponding to each condition. The results of the study showed no significant difference in criminal motivation according to the crime terminology. However, ‘abnormal motive crimes’ were found to be the least appropriate in terms of the tools used in the crimes, the relationship between the offender and the victim, and the location of the crimes. The phenomenon of mudjima crimes explored in this study was identified as interpersonal violence violences involving the use of a weapon against a stranger. Based on the results, the conceptual framework of a term for the phenomenon of mudjima crimes was discussed
