대한민국역사박물관의 건립과정을 비판하는 과정에서 그것을 단순히 권력 투쟁의 전리품으로 두어서는 안 된다는 자각이 공공영역에서 역사 재현이 갖추어야 할 윤리적 기준과 민주적 준칙에 관한 관심으로 이어졌다. 그 후 갱신 과정에서 그 박물관은 ‘공공역사 포럼’을 열어 공공역사의 관점을 찾아 나섰다. 한국에서 공공역사 개념과 관점이 발전하는데 그 포럼이 미친 영향을 인정할 필요가 있다. 공공역사의 관점에서 현대사박물관을 비롯한 역사박물관의 기본 성격과 역할에 대해 다시 논의해야 한다. 현대사박물관이 국가권력의 영향을 받지 않고 독립적이면서 독특한 역사 재현 주체로 거듭나도록 여러 제도적 실천적 방안들을 본격적으로 연구하고 토론해야 할 때다. 현재의 공공역사 조건을 그대로 둔다면 거듭되는 권력 교체로 만신창이가 될 것은 무엇보다 현대사박물관이다. 물론, 정치적 독립성을 확보한다고 해서 현대사박물관이 곧장 더 나아지리라는 보장은 없다. 그래서 이 글은 현대사박물관이 전시 관점의 확대와 갱신이 왜 필요한지를 덧붙였고 진본성의 의미를 통해 현대사박물관의 고유한 역할을 높였다. 향후 건립된 한국 공공역사협회 안에서 역사박물관 포럼을 결성해 그 토론을 이어가기를 바란다.

During its construction and early operation, the museum highlighted the problems of presenting and utilising history in public spaces. Criticism of the museum's construction process led to an interest in the ethical standards and democratic norms of presenting history in the public sphere. During the renewal process of the National Museum of Korean History, the museum organized a "Public History Forum" to seek perspectives on public history. It is important to recognize the influence of this forum on the development of concepts and perspectives of public history in Korea. From the perspective of public history, the fundamental nature and role of history museums should be discussed anew. It is time to seriously examine and discuss various institutional and practical measures to make contemporaty history museums in South Korea independent and unique historical representations that are free from the influence of state power. If the current conditions of public history are left as they are, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in particular will just suffer from the repeated changes of state power. Of course, securing political independence is no guarantee that museums will immediately improve. This article therefore contributes to the reasons why the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History needs to broaden and renew its exhibition perspectives and emphasizes its unique role through the importance of authenticity. I hope to continue the discussion by establishing a Forum for history museums within the newly coming Korean Society of Public History.
