인류의 역사는 노동의 역사라 해도 과언이 아니다. 노동 영화는 영화의 탄생과 함께 지금까지 노동자의 삶과 노동 현장을 사실적으로 재현해 왔다. 본 연구는 벨기에의 다르덴 형제(Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne)와 영국의 켄 로치(Ken Loach) 감독이 제작한 노동 영화를 ‘기술(technology)’의 관점으로 바라보는 통합적 분석을 시도한다. 이를 위하여 프랑스의 사회학자이자 기술 사상가인 자크 엘륄(Jacques Ellul)의 변증법적 논의를 차용한다. 이는 기존의 선행연구들이 주목했던 노동 영화 속 노동자, 노동 계급, 노동 현장 등의 단일한 요소를 넘어, 기술 사회의 노동이 야기한 문제를 유기적으로 분석하기 위함이다. 다르덴 형제와 로치 감독은 현실의 모순을 고발하는 사회적 리얼리즘 영화를 통해 영화적 액티비즘을 실현해 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 다르덴 형제의 <약속 La promesse>(1996), <로제타 Rosetta>(1999)>, <내일을 위한 시간 Deux jours, une nuit>(2014)과 로치 감독의 <나, 다니엘 블레이크 I, Daniel Blake>(2016), <미안해요, 리키 Sorry We Missed You>(2019), <나의 올드 오크 The Old Oak>(2023)에 나타난 노동의 문제를 엘륄의 사회결정론적 기술론과 기독교적 가치관으로 풀어가고자 한다. 노동 영화는 단순히 노동을 다루는 영화가 아니다. 그것은 노동자의 삶을 넘어, 기술이 지배하는 현대사회의 단상이기도 하다. 이것이 바로 노동 영화로부터 현대사회의 기술이 갖는 함의를 통합적으로 고찰하려는 이유이다.
The history of human beings can be said to the history of labor. Since the birth of film, labor films have realistically reproduced the lives and work places of workers. This study attempts an integrated analysis of the labor films produced by the Belgian directors Dardenne brothers (Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne) and the British director Ken Loach from a technological perspective. For this purpose, I borrow the dialectical discussion of Jacques Ellul, a French sociologist and technology thinker. This is to organically analyze the problems caused by labor in a technological society, going beyond the single elements of workers, the working class, and the workplace in labor films that previous studies have focused on. The Dardenne brothers and Loach have realized cinematic activism by producing social realist films that expose the contradictions of reality. Accordingly, this study focuses on the various issues of labor presented in the Dardenne brothers' La promesse (1996), Rosetta (1999), and Deux jours, une nuit (2014) and director Loach's I, Daniel Blake (2016), Sorry We Missed You (2019), and My Old O ak (2024) and seeks to solve this problem using theory of deterministic technology and Christian values. Labor films are not simply films that deal with labor, but are also a reflection of the modern society dominated by technology. This is the reason for comprehensively examining the implications of the technology.
