통속은 다수가 널리 공유한(common, popular) 일상·언어·풍속으로, 예술적 가치보다 흥미 본위의 오락물, 상업적 목적으로 대중적인 기대와 흥미 충족에 목적을 둔다. 고전시가 중에서는 고려가요와 사설시조 그리고 일부 歌辭작품에서 통속적 특징이 두드러졌고, 통속성은 과장과 반전과 웃음, 슬픔의 과잉, 일탈의 욕망, 비속성과 감각성, 性的욕망, 投射와 자기방어, 현재의 향락, 협상과 흥정 등 다양한 모습으로 나타났다. 통속성의 사회문화적 배경으로는 현실 도피 욕구, 본능 표출의 욕망, 개방과 상업적 분위기, 공연예술의 현장성, 脫엄숙주의 등을 들 수 있다. 통속성이 강한 시가는 인간의 자연스러운 감정, 인간 상호 간의 욕망을 드러내고 있다. 작품의 면면을 살피면, 정신보다는 물질, 이념(관념)보다는 감각, 이성보다는 감성, 대결·긴장보다는 공감·이완, 절제보다는 표출, 일보다는 놀이, 추상성보다는 구체성, 理想보다는 현실에 치우치는 작품들이 많았고, 그 시대 삶과 생각의 변화 양상을 잘 반영하였다.

Commonality in classical Korean poetry is manifested through the extensive use of everyday language, customs, and interests, often favored for their entertainment value rooted in popular culture rather than artistic excellence. This approach primarily serves commercial objectives by aligning with the public’s expectations and interests. In classical Korean poetry, notably in genres such as Goryeo Gayo, Saseolsijo, and selected Gasa(歌辭), the characteristic features of commonality are prominently displayed. These features include exaggeration, plot twists, humor, excessive emotions, deviant desires, obscenity, sensuality, sexual desires, projection, self-defense, indulgence in present pleasures, negotiation, and bargaining. These aspects of commonality are shaped by socio-cultural factors, including a desire to escape from reality, an urge to express instincts, and the influences of openness and commercialism, alongside the immediacy of performing arts and a departure from solemnity. Poetry rich in commonality prominently features the natural human emotions and mutual desires, contrasting with divine influences. A detailed analysis of these works reveals a preference for material over the spiritual values, sensation over ideology, emotion over reason, empathy and relaxation over conflict and tension, expression over restraint, leisure over labor, concreteness over abstraction, and reality over ideals(理想). These features vividly reflect the dynamic shifts in the lives and thoughts of their times.
