본고는 여성 이야기꾼 최은남의 생애와 이야기 목록을 대상으로 연행 상의 특징에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 최은남은 1936년에 전라남도 구례에서 출생했다. 10~11세 무렵에 아버지의 직장 이전으로 전라남도 여수시 소라면 덕양리로 이주하여 지금까지 평생을 그곳에서 살고 계신 토박이다. 유복한 어린 시절을 보냈고, 친정어머니와 할머니에게서 다양한 옛날이야기를 들으며 성장했다. 또한 자신도 역사책 읽기를 좋아하여 동네 사람들로부터 ‘유식한 할머니’라는 평가를 듣고 있다. 최은남은 총 29편의 이야기를 들려주었고, 그중에서 23편이 전설이다. 이는 여성 화자는 신변잡기와 흥미 위주의 민담 구연에 능하다는 일반적인 화자론과는 다른 것이다. 더구나 23편의 전설 중에서 9편은 자신이 살고 있는 여수시 소라면 일대의 역사와 전설이라는 점에서 여성 화자임에도 토박이 남성 화자에게서 볼 수 있는 면모를 보여주고 있다. 또한 최은남은 이야기의 진실성을 따지고, 거기에 자신의 인식의 결과를 덧붙여서 이야기를 마무리한다. 이것 역시 주로 유식한 남성 화자에게서 볼 수 있는 특징이다. 마지막으로 최은남은 흥미 위주의 민담을 구연할 때조차도 교훈성을 강조하는 방식으로 이야기를 마무리하려는 양상을 보여준다. 이러한 구연 방식은 ‘유식한 할머니’인 자신은 쓸모없는 이야기는 하지 않는다는 심리가 기저에 깔려있기에 보여지는 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 최은남은 다양한 이야기 목록을 보유하고 있는 유능한 여성 화자이다. 또한 여성 화자임에도 유식한 이야기꾼에 속하면서 남성 화자의 특징을 보여주고 있기도 하다. 이는 이야기 꾼에 대한 그간의 연구를 통해서 남성과 여성 이야기꾼의 정형화되고 일반화된 양상에서 벗어난 것으로 이러한 사례가 비단 최은남의 경우만 있는 것은 아닐 것이다. 이야기의 세계가 넓고 다양한 만큼 이야기꾼도 각양각색으로 존재할 것이고, 아직은 이야기꾼에 대한 이론을 일반화하기에는 여전히 살펴봐야 할 이야기꾼들이 무궁하게 존재하기 때문이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the life and story list of Choi Eun-nam, a female storyteller, and the characteristics of the story. Choi Eun-nam was born in Gurye, South Jeolla Province in 1936. At the age of 10, She moved to Deokyang-ri, Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, and lives there until now. She had a wealthy childhood and grew up listening to many old stories from her mother and grandmother. In addition, she herself likes to read history books, so she is evaluated as a “knowledgeable grandmother” by the local people. Choi Eun-nam told a total of 29 stories, of which 23 are legends. This is different from the general speaker theory that female speakers are good at miscellaneous stories and interesting folk tales. Moreover, nine of the 23 legends show the appearance of a native male speaker in that it is the history and legend of Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si, where he lives. In addition, Choi Eun-nam evaluates the truth of the story and concludes the story by adding the result of his perception to it. This is also a characteristic that can be seen mainly in a well-known male speaker. Finally, even when Choi Eun-nam narrates interest-oriented folktales, he narrates them in a way that emphasizes lesson. This way of narration can be said to be a characteristic that is based on the psychology that he does not tell useless stories as a ‘well-informed grandmother’. Choi Eun-nam is a competent female narrator with a diverse list of stories. In addition, even though it is a female speaker, it belongs to a well-known storyteller and shows the characteristics of a male speaker. This is a departure from the standardized and generalized aspects of male and female storytellers through previous studies on storytellers, and this case is not unique to Choi Eun-nam. As the world of story is wide and diverse, storytellers will exist in various ways, and there are still many storytellers to look at to generalize the theory of storytellers.
