페스트 펜데믹은 중세를 무너뜨리고 종교개혁의 문을 여는 데 일조를 하였다. 교회가 세상을 통치하고 개인의 삶과 죽음까지 관장하던 중세가 질병으로 인해 무너진 것이다. 물론 중세의 붕괴가 일시적으로 일어난 것은 아닐 지라도 흑사병은 중세 붕괴에 큰 역할을 하였다. 11, 12세기 십자군 운동에서 많은 영주들이 고향으로 돌아오지 못해 이들의 영지가 자유영지가 되어 도시로 발전하기도 하고, 일부는 왕의 소유가 되었다. 그리고 이는 절대왕정의 기초가 되었다. 또 흑사병의 결과로 많은 농민들과 농노들이 사망하여 봉건제도가 무너지게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 흑사병으로 인하여 교구민들을 돌보던 많은 사제들이 사망하게 되고 그 자리에 성직을 매매한 많은 자격이 없는 사제들이 들어왔다. 이로 인해 중세를 받치던 교권이 추락하게 되었다. 당시 교회는 시대의 변화를 따라가지 못하고 교황과 사제들은 타락한 모습 그대로였다. 봉건제도의 붕괴, 교권의 추락, 왕정의 발달 등으로 중세는 무너지고 종교개혁의 시대로 도래한 것이다. 오늘날 코로나 펜데믹 이후 교회들이 변화하고 있다. 이때 우리 교회도 시대의 부름에 함께 나아가야 한다. 변화하지 않는 중세의 교회가 무너지게 되었던 것처럼 오늘날 교회도 변화하지 않으면 무너질 수밖에 없다.

Just as the medieval church collapsed if it did not change, the church today is bound to collapse if it does not change.
