알프레드 A. 롱든(Alfred Appleby Longden, 1875-1954)의 미술 행정가로서의 활동은 전간기 영제국의 문화 외교 정책과 영국문화원의 시각예술 관련 사업을 통합적으로 이해하는 데 중요한 단서가 된다. 선행 연구에서는 제대로 다루어진 적이 없으나, 본 연구는 20세기 전반에 활동했던 영국의 미술계 주요 인사로서 롱든의 활동을 재조명하고, 그의 경력을 통해 전간기 제국박람회와 1935년에 형성된 영국문화원 미술위원회 사이의 연관성을 밝히고자 한다. 전간기 제국박람회의 미술 전시와 동시대에 열렸던 베니스 비엔날레의 영국관 전시 기획, 상무부의 전시 부서, 영국문화원의 미술위원회(오늘날의 시각예술부)를 모두 관통하는 롱든의 이력은 노골적인 제국주의 프로파간다의 시대로부터 문화 기관을 통해 연성 권력(soft power)을 행사하는 시대로의 이행과 영제국의 구조 변화를 보여주는 중요한 사례이다.

Alfred A. Longden (1875-1954) played a pivotal role as an art administrator, significantly influencing the cultural diplomacy strategies of the early 20th-century British Empire and the nascent British Council’s activities in the realm of visual arts. Despite previous oversight regarding his contributions, this study seeks to reevaluate Longden’s significance as a key figure in the British art world of the first half of the 20th century. It aims to elucidate the interrelationship between the three empire exhibitions of the interwar period and the British Council’s Fine Arts Committee founded in 1935. Longden’s involvement in organising the art sections of the empire exhibitions, as well as his role in managing the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the Exhibitions Branch of the Board of Trade, the Fine Arts Committee (today’s Visual Arts Department), underscores a notable shift from overt imperialist propaganda to the exercise of soft power through cultural institutions. It highlights a transition in the structure and dynamics of the British Empire.
