The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between pre-service early childhood teachers’ problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and college adaptation, and to verify whether self-directed learning ability has a mediating effect on the relationship between problem-solving ability and college adaptation. For this purpose, a survey was completed by 237 students in the departments of early childhood education at three three-year colleges located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Descriptive statistics analysis and Pearson’s correlation analysis were performed on the collected data using SPSS 21.0, and mediation effects were analyzed using SPSS PROCESS Macro. The research results were as follows. First, a positive correlation was found between the problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and college adaptation of pre-service early childhood teachers. Second, it was confirmed that there was a complete mediating effect of self-directed learning ability on the relationship between problem-solving ability and college adaptation of pre-service early childhood teachers. Based on these results, discussions were held on educational practices to enhance the problem-solving skills and self-directed learning abilities in pre-service early childhood teachers to support their adaptation to university life in future early childhood teacher training programs. These discussions covered the development of courses and teaching-learning methods, as well as support for participation in extracurricular programs.
