경양역과 선암역(선암역)은 고려시대 22역도가 편성되던 시기에 설치되어, 1896년 역제가 폐지될 때까지 유지되었다. 고려시대에는 두 역이 동일한 승나주도에 소속되어 있었지만, 개경으로 통하는 간선 도로에 위치한 선암역의 비중이 높았다. 교통의 요충지인 선암역은 고려 말 그 인근에 원의 역할을 하는 선암사가 세워졌던 것으로 보인다. 한편 고려시대의 경양역은 광주지역에 있었다는 사실 외에는 기록이 남아 있지 않다. 하지만 조선이 건국된 이후 경양도가 신설되면서, 경양역은 그 위상이 달라지게 되었다. 경양도는 현재 전남의 내륙을 동서로 연결하는 역도였다. 이러한 경양도의 신설은 고려 말 왜구의 침입으로 산간 내륙에 많은 인구가 유입되면서, 이 지역들이 개발되었기 때문이다. 그리고 조선이 건국된 후, 주로 남북축으로 발달했던 고려의 역로망을 보완하기 위해 동서 방향의 역도를 많이 설치한 것도 그 요인이라 할 수 있다. 경양도는 조선 초기 소규모의 역도였지만, 조선 후기 광주의 위세가 커지면서 경양찰방은 다른 역도의 찰방보다 그 위상이 높아졌다. 경양역의 관청 규모나 관리의 수, 보유한 말의 숫자도 다른 역보다 더 많았다. 반면 선암역은 조선시대에 간선 역로망인 청암도에 편제되었지만, 청암역의 속역이 되면서 그 위상이 낮아졌다. 선암역이 역로망에서 차지하는 비중은 그대로였지만, 청암역의 속역이었기 때문에 관련 기록이 거의 남아있지 않다. 경양역은 경양도의 중심역으로 「경양역지」가 편찬되었지만, 선암역은 이곳을 지나간 문인들의 작품에 가끔 등장할 뿐이었다. 조선시대 두 역의 위상은 역로망에서 차지한 중요도와는 관련이 없었다.

The foundation of Gyeong-Yang Station (景陽驛) and Seon-Am Station (仙巖驛) occurred since the Goryeo’s organization of 22 yŏktos (驛道), and both stations remained until 1896. During Goryeo Dynasty, the Seon-Am station, located on the arterial road to Gaegyeong, played more important roles, even both stations belonged to Seungnajudo (昇羅州道). As Seon-Am Station was a transportation hub, it seems that it was necessary to build the Seon-Am temple as the Won (院). There are only few reports left about the Gyeong-Yang Station except the location of the station was in Gwang-Ju. However, since the foundation of Gyeong-Yang Do (景陽道) in Joseon Dynasty, the Gyeong-Yang Station became more important. The Gyeong-Yang Do was a yŏkto connecting eastern and western inland of Jeollanam-Do. The population influx to mountainous inland due to the Japanese pirate invasions at the end of Goryeo Dynasty caused developments of this area. This regional advancement necessitated the formation of Gyeong-Yang Do. Joseon’s effort to complement existing Goryeo’s yŏktos which spanned from north to south was also a crucial reason for the formation of a new yŏktos. The Gyeong-Yang Ch’albang (景陽察訪) became more pivotal in the late Joseon Dynasty due to the rise of Gwang-Ju. The Gyeong-Yang Station had more employees and horses compared to the other stations. In contrast to the Gyeong-Yang Station, the Seon-Am Station lost its fame and became a component of Cheong-Eom Station in Joseon Dynasty even though its role remained the same. Reports about the Seon-Am Station only appear in few literary works while ｢Gyeong-Yang Yŏkji (景陽驛誌)｣ provided detailed descriptions about the Gyeong-Yang Station. The prestige of both stations was not related to the importance of each station.
