린위탕의 『Famous Chinese Short Stories』는 당송 시대의 전기를 위주로 20편의 이야기를 영어로 번역한 앤솔러지다. 린위탕은 번역, 제한적인 첨삭과 변형, 전면적인 재구성과 다시 쓰기를 다양하게 활용하면서 이질적인 이야기들을 근대 단편소설로 재편성했다. 특히 여성의 주체적인 삶과 자기 운명의 개척, 근대적 욕망에 관해 새로운 상상력을 발휘한 다시 쓰기를 통해 고전 서사를 독창적이고 혁신적으로 재해석했다. 유광렬의 『중국전기소설집』은 린위탕의 앤솔러지 가운데 10편을 선택하여 한국어로 충실하게 직역했다. 유광렬은 전기의 성격이 짙은 작품을 선별했으며, 린위탕의 적극적인 다시 쓰기를 번역하지 않았다. 결과적으로 원작에 가까운 전기, 부분적인 다시 쓰기와 변형을 거친 애정소설과 여귀 이야기가 번역되었다. 린위탕의 다시 쓰기가 서구 독자의 취향과 근대 단편소설의 모델에 초점을 맞춘 반면 유광렬은 전기의 장르적 특색을 부각하여 번역함으로써 중국 고전을 대하는 시각의 차이를 뚜렷하게 보여주었다. 린위탕과 유광렬이 전기를 대하는 서로 다른 태도와 방법론은 동양과 서양, 전통과 근대의 교차를 둘러싼 번역문학의 역사성과 상상력을 드러낸 점에서 중요하다.
Yutang Lin’s Famous Chinese Short Stories is an anthology of twenty stories from the Tang and Song Dynasties, mainly chuanqies, translated into English. Through a variety of translations, partial additions and omissions, limited transformations, and overall reconstitutions and retellings, Lin reorganized the disparate stories into modern short stories. In particular, his rewritings (retellings) of the classical narratives with new imaginations about women’s independent lives, the pioneering of their own destinies, and modern desires led to original and innovative reinterpretations. Gwangnyeol Yu’s Collection of Chinese Chuanqies is a faithful Korean translation of 10 stories from Lin’s anthology. Yu selected works that are more in the nature of chuanqi and did not translate Lin’s aggressive rewriting style. As a result, he translated chuanqies that are close to the original, and romantic fictions and tales of female ghosts that were partially rewritten and transformed. While Lin’s rewritings focused on the tastes of Western readers and the models of modern short stories, Yu’s translations emphasized the genre specificities of chuanqi, clearly demonstrating the difference in their views of Chinese classics. The different attitudes and methodologies of Yutang Lin and Gwangnyeol Yu toward chuanqi are important in that they reveal the historicity and imagination of literary translation at the intersection of East and West, tradition and modernity.
