Trends and Challenges in Geopark Research in Korea
김창환 ( Kim Chang-hwan )
DOI 10.16968/JKGA.31.2.1

This study aims to identify trends in geopark research in Korea and provide foundational data for future studies in various fields, including geomorphology. The publications reviewed were up to December 2023. A total of 149 geopark-related papers have been published in various journals. The first geopark paper appeared in the Journal of the Korean Earth Science Society in 2007, followed by the first geography-related geopark paper in the Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association in 2009. Research was published across 39 journals, with journals such as ‘Journal of the Geological Society of Korea’, ‘Landscape and Geography’, and ‘Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association’ showing a relatively high proportion. Papers publsihsed in geological and geographical journals accounted for 80% of the total. A total of 218 authors have contributed to geopark-related papers, with the most prolific researcher contributing to 17 papers. The most cited paper was published in the Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association by Kim(2009), studying the activities and geographical significance of geoparks in Korea. This reflects the initial research interest in geoparks in the field of geography. The most common research topics were geosites, followed by geotourism program development and education, policy, and geopark management. Geopark activities are fundamentally based on the sustainable development of the region. Therefore, it is crucial to have ongoing plans for geopark activities and their development, to manage their implementation effectively, and to continuously develop geostories for geosites. The ultimate conclusion of this study is that more research related to these topics needs to be conducted.
