필자는 먼저 학자들은 일반적으로 여운형을 진보적 민족주의자로 혹은 사회민주주의자로 평가하고, 여운형은 자신을 진보적 민주주의자로 명명하고 있음을 정리하였다. 이어서 이 논문은 공화주의의 정의에 대해 살펴보고, 처음으로 여운형의 사상과 활동이 공화주의와 어떻게 접목될 수 있는지, 공화주의적 관점에서 여운형의 모든 글과 연설을 분석하는 새로운 시도를 하였다. 연구 결과, 여운형은 인민이 중심이 되는 공화주의를 꿈꾸었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히 자유도 중요하지만 소외받는 민중들에 대한 연대와 배려를 강조하였다는 점에서 그를 “대중민주주의 공화주의자”라고도 말할 수 있을 것이다. 여운형의 좌우합작을 통한 통일운동은 뜻을 이루지 못했지만, 오늘날 우리는 그의 사상과 활동을 공화주의라는 관점으로 창조적으로 재해석하여 보다 좋은 사회와 미래의 한반도를 위한 자양분으로 삼을 필요가 있다. ‘공화’라는 말은 모두 화합한다는 의미를 이미 그 속에 담고 있어서 사회적 갈등이 심각한 우리 사회에 주는 의미가 크기 때문이다.

I first summarize that scholars generally characterize Yeo Un-hyung as a progressive nationalist or social democrat, and that Yeo Un-hyung labeled himself as a progressive democrat. This paper then examines the definition of republicanism and, for the first time, attempts to analyze how Yeo's ideas and activities can be linked to republicanism, analyzing all of Yeo's writings and speeches from a republican perspective. As a result, I found that Yeo envisioned a republicanism centered on the people, emphasizing solidarity through dialogue and compromise, and planning for a grand coalition. In particular, we can say that he was a “popular democratic republican” in that he emphasized solidarity and consideration for the marginalized people, although freedom is also important. Although Yeo Un-hyung's unification movement through a left-right coalition failed to fulfill his intentions, today we need to creatively reinterpret his ideas and activities through the lens of republicanism and use them as nourishment for a better society and a future Korean peninsula. This is because the word ‘republic’ already contains the meaning of unity in its concept, which has great significance for our society with serious social conflicts.
