본 연구는 아프리카 고유의 문화와 역사를 미래적 스타일을 통해 환기하고자 하는 아프로퓨처리즘의 영화적 재현 양상과 의의를 살펴본다. 오늘날의 아프리카 영화는 더 이상 식민 과거에 매몰되지 않고, 전통적 감수성을 적극적으로 현대적 영감의 원천으로 삼음으로써 문화적 자유로움을 증명한다. 그러나 <블랙 팬서>로 대표되는 SF 영화의 성공과 난립으로 인해 아프로퓨처리즘이 SF로 고착화되고 아프리카인이 선도하는 유토피아가 아프리카가 꿈꾸는 유일한 미래인 것처럼 왜곡되어 수용되어 왔다. 이러한 편견을 해소하고자 본 연구에서는 장피에르 베콜로의 <모차르트 구역>과 와누리 카히우의 <품지>를 통해 해방과 저항이라는 아프로퓨처리즘 본래의 정신을 찾아보고자 한다. 이 두 작품은 백인이나 서구에 대항하는 것이 아니라 현재 아프리카 내부의 문제를 극복하고 새로운 사회 질서를 구축함으로써 현실성 있는 긍정적 미래를 만들어나가는 것이 중요함을 이야기한다. 이 과정에서 동반되는 상상력은 서구의 것이 아니라 아프리카의 전통적 철학과 가치에서 온다. 이 작품들의 메시지와 의의를 살펴봄으로써 아프로퓨처리즘의 지향점을 점검하고 아프리카의 미래와 아프리카 영화의 발전 가능성을 전망하는 계기로 삼고자 한다.

This study examines the cinematic representations and implications of Afrofuturism, which seeks to revitalize Africa’s unique culture and history through futuristic styles. Today’s African cinema is no longer mired in the colonial past, but rather demonstrates cultural freedom by actively using traditional sensibilities as a source of contemporary inspiration. However, the success and dominance of science fiction films, epitomized by Black Panther, has led to a distorted reception of Afrofuturism as science fiction, as if African-led utopias are the only future Africa can envision. To address these prejudices, this study explores the original spirit of Afrofuturism, which is liberation and resistance, through the works of Jean-Pierre Bekolo’s Quartier Mozart and Wanuri Kahiu’s Pumzi. These two films speak to the importance of overcoming current internal African problems and building a new social order to create a realistic positive future, not against whites or the West. The imagination that accompanies this process comes not from the West, but from traditional African philosophies and values. By examining the messages and meanings of these works, we hope to confirm the original orientation of Afrofuturism and look forward to the future development of African cinema.
