이 글은 어휘 ‘핑계’의 어원에 대한 여러 가능성을 검토하고 ‘핑계’와 관련된 어휘의 역사적 변천 양상 및 그것들이 사용된 구문에 대하여 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. ‘핑계’의 어원은 ‘憑藉’ 또는 ‘辨解’로 보는데, 후기 중세 한국어 시기 ‘憑藉’와 ‘辨解’의 한국한자음과 각 한자의 조선 시대 중국어 발음을 어휘 ‘핑계’의 최초 출현형인 ‘핀게’와 비교하였을 때 ‘핀게’는 중국어 발음을 차용하였을 가능성이 높으나 확언할 수 없다. ‘핑계’의 어원에 대해서는 더 고찰할 필요가 있다. 어휘 ‘핑계’는 문헌에서 ‘핀게’, ‘핀계’, ‘핑게’, ‘핑계’ 등으로 나타나며, ‘挑釁’, ‘托辭’, ‘尋趁’, ‘推諉’, ‘假托’, ‘推’, ‘諉’, ‘推托’, ‘推說’, ‘由’, ‘通’ 등이 ‘핑계’가 포함된 어구로 번역되었는데, 문헌의 성격에 따라 번역 양상이 다르지 않았다. 명사 ‘핑계’가 쓰이는 문장은 ‘NP이 핀게로 V’가 처음 나타난 후 ‘NP₁이 NP₂를 핑계로 V’ 등으로 확대되었으며, V에는 ‘말-’, ‘대-’, ‘삼-’, ‘쓰-’ 등이 쓰였다. ‘핑계’를 어기로 합성 또는 파생된 동사가 쓰이는 문장 형식은 ‘NP₁이 NP₂를 핀게-’를 기본 형식으로 하여 점차 다양한 형식으로 확대되었다. ‘핑계’를 어기로 새롭게 합성 또는 파생된 어휘는 파생 동사, 합성 동사, 합성 명사 순서로 나타났다.

This study aims to examine the different possibilities for the etymology of the word “핑계” and explore the historical evolution of words related to “핑계” and the syntax in which they are used. The etymology of “핑계” is believed to be “憑藉” or “辨解”. When comparing the word “핀게” (the first appearance of the word “핑계”) with Sino-Korean readings of “憑藉” and “辨解” in Late Middle Korean and their corresponding Chinese pronunciations, “핀게” might have been borrowed from the corresponding Chinese pronunciation. However, this cannot be confirmed; thus, the etymology of “핑계” needs further exploration. In the literature produced during the Joseon dynasty, the lexeme “핑계” appears as “핀게”, “핀계”, “핑게”, “핑계”, and so on, and is translated as “挑釁”, “托辭”, “尋趁”, “推諉”, “假托”, “推”, “諉”, “推托”, “推說”, “由”, “通”, and so on. The sentence with the noun “핑계” first appeared as “NP이 핀게로 V” and then expanded to “NP₁이 NP₂를 핑계로 V”, where V is used for “말-”, “대-”, “삼-”, “쓰-”, and so on. Sentence forms with verbs compounded or derived from “핑계” were gradually expanded to various forms, starting with “NP₁이 NP₂를 핀게-” as the basic form. The newly compounded or derived vocabulary based on “핑계” appeared in the following order: derived verbs, compound verbs, and compound nouns.
