본고는 표준어에서 “바로 전날”을 뜻하는 ‘안날’의 의미와 기원을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고에서 논의한 바는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ≪표준국어대사전≫에서는 첫음절이 단음인 ‘안날’이 “바로 전날”의 의미로 나타나나 실제 중부방언에서는 거의 사어화된 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 이 ‘안날’이 한반도의 양 끝에서 장음 혹은 장음으로 치환할 수 있는 성조로 나타난다. 이 장음이 ‘안날’의 기원적인 모습일 것이며 ≪표준국어대사전≫의 단음은 이 장음으로부터 변화된 결과이다. 셋째, 한반도 양 끝에서 기원적 모습을 유지하고 있는 장음의 ‘안날’은 중부방언에서 시작된 ‘장음>단음’ 변화를 입지 않은 잔재형이다. 넷째, ‘안날’의 ‘안’은, ‘□-[向]’의 활용형 ‘아□’의 변화형 ‘아안’이 줄어든 형태이고 따라서 장음으로 실현된다. 다섯째, ‘안날’의 ‘안’이 “向”을 뜻하는 상황을 이해할 수 없게 되어 ‘안’을 이해할 수 있는 “內”와 관련시킨 결과가 “바로 전날”을 뜻하는 첫음절 단음의 ‘안날’이고, 이런 과정에서도 사멸하지 않고 남은 첫음절 장음의 ‘안날’이 “다음날”의 의미를 갖게 된 결과가 경남방언에서 “다음날”을 뜻하는 ‘안날’인 것으로 추정된다. 하지만 왜 하필 경남방언에서만 이런 양상이 나타났는지는 알 수 없다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning and origin of ‘Annal’. What was discussed in this paper is as follows. First, in the central dialect, ‘Annal’, which has a short vowel, appears to mean “the day before,” but in reality, it appears to have become almost a dead word. Second, this ‘Annal’ appears as a tone that can be replaced by a long vowel or a long vowel at both extremes of the Korean Peninsula. This long vowel corresponds to the original form of ‘Annal’, and the short vowel of the central dialect is the result of a change from the long vowel. Third, the long vowel ‘Annal’, which maintains its original form at both extremes of the Korean Peninsula, is a relic that has not undergone the ‘long vowel > short vowel’ change that began in the central dialect. Fourth, ‘An’ in ‘Annal’ is a reduced form of the conjugational form ‘Aan’ and is therefore realized as a long vowel. Fifth, the result of relating the ‘An’ of ‘Annal’ to the understandable ‘An(“inner”)’ is short vowel ‘Annal’, which means “the day before”, and in this process, the remaining long vowel ‘Annal’ does not die. It was assumed that the result of the assigned meaning was ‘Annal’, which means “the next day” in the Gyeongnam dialect.
