This essay provides a review of the Women in Negotiation Course conducted by the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UN DPPA), attended by the author, Major Maeum Han from the Republic of Korea Army HQ. The course, held online over 10 weeks, aimed to address the underrepresentation of women in ceasefire negotiations by equipping participants with essential skills. The program, a collaborative effort between the Gender, Peace, and Security Unit (GPS) and the Mediation Support Unit (MSU), attracted a diverse group of 30 fellows from around the world. Structured with six modules, the course employed a variety of teaching methods, including live sessions, pre-reading materials, and interactive exercises. Key insights from the course include an enhanced understanding of cultural differences in negotiation terms, emphasizing the importance of women's participation in peace processes. The author highlights the positive impact of women's involvement, drawing on data and practical exercises. Additionally, the essay explores the relevance of youth participation in negotiations, using the case of South Korea to spark discussions among participants. The diverse nature of conflicts worldwide is also examined, with personal stories illustrating the varied experiences and challenges faced by participants. The conclusion reflects on the significance of the 10-week experience, emphasizing the value of cultural exchange and the broadening of perspectives within the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) framework. Major Han expresses a commitment to applying the gained knowledge in her current role and future Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) activities.
