《팔준도(八骏图)》는 유명한 작가 심종문(沈从文)이 청도(青岛)대학교에서 교직을 맡던 시절에 쓴 단편 소설이다. 작품은 청도대학교의 몇 명 동료들을 모델로 삼아 여덟 명 교수들의 서로 다른 생활 태도와 생활 방식을 묘사한다. 스토리를 통해 ‘팔준’의 도덕관의 허위성을 드러내 풍자적인 효과가 보인다. 본고에서는 소설 텍스트를 중심으로 ‘대학 서사’의 풍자성과 비판성 방면에서 《팔준도》의 인물 이미지를 깊이 분석한다. 이미지의 종류에서 팔준은 물리학자, 철학자, 역사학자, 육조(六朝) 문학 전문가 등이 있다. 인물 이미지의 특징적 내면에선 이러한 지식인들은 겉으로는 노련하고 엄숙하며 인의와 도덕을 내세우면서도 결코 세속적 정욕에 떠날 수 없다. 본고를 통해 《팔준도》라는 소설에 대한 학계의 관심을 불러일으키고, 그 더 큰 문학적 가치를 발굴하기를 희망한다. 이로써 사람들은 이 소설의 심층적 의미와 내면을 더 잘 파악할 수 있기를 바란다.

“The Eight Steeds” is a short story written by the distinguished author Shen Congwen during his tenure as a professor at Qingdao University. Drawing upon his colleagues at Qingdao University as the prototypes for the characters, Shen crafts eight professors with the diverse attitudes and lifestyles. Through various narratives, the story exposes the hypocrisy of the “Eight Steeds’ ” moral stance, imbued with a sense of irony. This work delves into the text of “The Eight Steeds,” employing a critical lens focused on the irony and critique embedded in the narrative structure typical of university settings, to dissect the character portrayals in the novel. The characters include physicist, philosopher, historian, and specialist in Six Dynasties literature, among others. In terms of character traits, these “Steeds” present themselves as mature and dignified, espousing moral principles, yet their behavior contrasts with the worldly desires they cannot forsake. The proposed work aims to draw scholarly attention to “The Eight Steeds,” unearth its greater literary value, and enhance our understanding of the profound meanings and implications conveyed by the novel.
