KSL(Korean as a Second Language)은 다양한 이주 배경을 가진 학생들에게 한국어를 제2언어로 정규 수업 시간에 배울 수 있도록 하는 한국어 교육과정이다. 2017년부터 교육부는 초중고 학생들을 대상으로 제공되고 있는 국어과 교육과정 외에 제2언어로서의 한국어 교육과정을 제공하고 있다. 한국어 교육과정은 다양한 이주 배경을 가진 학생들의 한국어 문제 해결을 위해 초·중·고 교육과정으로 개발된 교육과정이다. 한국 사회도 이민자가 지속적으로 늘어나면서 다문화 교육이 필요하게 되었고 제2언어로서의 영어교육인 ESL(English as a Second Language)과 유사한 제도가 필요하게 되었다. 다인종 다민족이 어울려 살아야 하는 다문화 사회에서 교육이라는 큰 틀 안에서 한국어 교육이 다문화 교육의 한 부분으로도 고민이 되어야 하는 시기이기에 KSL 교육과정은 초·중·고 교육 안에서 고민이 필요한 교육이 되었다. 그러나 교육과정의 필요성에 따라 교육과정이 구체화 되거나 2022 개정 교육과정으로 보완이 이루어지기거나 하는 부분은 없었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 다문화 사회를 준비하는 대한민국이 다양한 이주 배경 학생들의 교육에 어느 정도로 준비가 되어 있는지를 경남의 다문화 교육을 중심으로 살피고자 한다.

KSL (Korean as a Second Language) is a Korean language curriculum that allows students with diverse immigrant backgrounds to learn Korean as a second language during regular class hours. Since 2017, the Ministry of Education has been providing a Korean language curriculum as a second language in addition to the Korean language curriculum offered to elementary, middle, and high school students. The Korean language curriculum has been developed for elementary, middle, and high school students to solve the Korean language problems of students with diverse immigrant backgrounds. As the number of immigrants in Korean society continues to increase, multicultural education has become necessary, and a system similar to ESL (English as a Second Language) education has been required. In a multicultural society where various races and ethnicities must live together, Korean language education within the larger framework of education must also be considered as part of multicultural education. Therefore, the KSL curriculum has become an important part of the education content that needs to be considered within elementary, middle, and high school education. However, there has been no specific development of the curriculum according to its necessity, nor has it been supplemented with the revised 2022 curriculum. This study aims to examine the extent to which Korea, in preparing for a multicultural society, is ready to educate students with diverse immigrant backgrounds, focusing on multicultural education in Gyeongnam.
