미술사에서 조선시대를 크게 4기로 나누어 볼 때, 조선시대 후기는 1700년경부터 1850년경까지를 이른다. 이 시기는 조선시대를 4기로 나누었을 때 가장 경제적, 사회적으로 안정되고 문화예술에서도 풍성한 열매를 맺은 시기이다. 사대부 화가와 화원 화가들이 모두 도전적이고 실험적인 화풍의 모색을 이루어 나갔고, 자신감을 가지고 조선의 아름다움에 대해 탐색했으며, 이를 통해서 조선의 문예를 부흥시킨 시대라 할 수 있다. 특히 진경산수화의 탄생은 우리 산수화사에서 기념비적인 일이었다. 중국의 화풍을 완벽히 소화하고 우리의 자연을 우리 식으로 표현한 것이다. 또한 이뿐만 아니라 조형적으로도 이상적인 화풍을 구축했다. 진경산수화의 탄생과 더불어 중국의 남종문인화를 조선화 시키는 작업도 조선 후기에 이루어졌다. 이는 사대부들을 중심으로 고아하고 문기 있는 화풍을 추구했으며, 조선 후기 이후 조선 말기의 화풍을 전조하게 된다. 조선 후기는 우리나라 전통 산수화풍의 절정을 이루는 시기이다. 진경산수화와 남종문인산수화의 고전을 완성하는 시기이기 때문이다. 이 글은 이러한 조선 후기 산수화풍을 당시 주요 작가의 작품을 통해서 새롭게 조명해 보고 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.

In art history, the Joseon Dynasty is largely divided into four periods. The late Joseon Dynasty runs from around 1700 to 1850. Out of the four periods, this period was the most economically and socially stable and bore abundant fruit in culture and arts. Both literati painters and painters from painting academies sought challenging and experimental painting styles and explored the beauty of Joseon with confidence. This made it possible for the late Joseon Dynasty to be called the literary revival period of Joseon. In particular, the birth of true-view landscape painting was a monumental event in the history of Korean landscape painting. This genre of painting perfectly incorporated the Chinese painting style, expressed Korea’s nature in its own unique way, and established an ideal painting style in terms of formative arts. Along with the birth of true-view landscape painting, the style of the Southern School of Chinese painting was adopted to and converted into the painting style of Joseon Dynasty in the late Joseon Dynasty. Literati mainly pursued a classical and genteel painting style, which foreshadowed the painting style of the last years in the late Joseon Dynasty. The late Joseon Dynasty was a period when Korea's traditional landscape painting style reached its peak. This is because it was the time when the classics of true-view landscape painting and Southern School of Chinese literati landscape painting were completed . This study aims to examine the landscape painting style of the late Joseon Dynasty in light of the works of artists of that period and find its significance.
