이 연구는 중학생 338명(남학생 183명, 여학생 155명)을 대상으로, 읽기 동기와 읽기 능력 사이에서 읽기 행동(읽기 빈도, 읽기 양, 읽기 시간)이 어떻게 매개 역할을 하는지 성별에 따라 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과로는 첫째, 읽기 동기가 읽기 빈도(연간)를 매개로 하여 읽기 능력에 간접적으로 영향을 미친다는 사실을 확인하였다. 이는 읽기 빈도(연간)가 읽기 동기와 읽기 능력 사이의 중요한 연결 통로로 작용한다는 점을 입증한 결과이다. 둘째, 읽기 동기와 읽기 능력의 관계에서 읽기 빈도(연간)의 매개효과는 여학생 집단에서만 긍정적으로 나타나, 성별에 따른 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 해당 연구는 읽기 빈도(연간)가 중학생의 읽기 능력에 미치는 영향을 성별 관점에서 심층적으로 분석함으로써, 읽기 동기와 읽기 능력 사이의 복잡한 관계를 명료하게 이해하는 데 중요한 시사점을 제공하였다. 이 연구 결과를 바탕으로 중학생의 성별에 따른 맞춤형 읽기 프로그램 개발이 필요하다고 제안한다.

This study targeted 338 middle school students(183 boys and 155 girls) for a gender-wise analysis to understand how reading behavior(reading frequency, reading amount, and reading time) mediates the relationship between reading motivation and reading ability. The main research results include the following: First, reading motivation was confirmed to affect reading ability indirectly through reading frequency(annual). This result proves that reading frequency(annual) acts as an important link between reading motivation and reading ability. Second, the mediating effect of reading frequency(annual) in the relationship between reading motivation and reading ability was positive only in female students, confirming a difference by gender. This study provides important implications for understanding the complex relationship between reading motivation and reading ability by analyzing the effect of reading frequency(annual) on middle school students’ reading abilities from a gender perspective. Based on the results, we recommend developing a reading program tailored to the gender of middle school students.
