본 논문의 목적은, 분황(芬皇) 원효(元曉, 617~686)의 저술 중 단편잔간(斷編殘簡)으로 전해지는 『화엄경소(華嚴經疏)』의 내용과 특징을 전체적으로 검토해 보는 것이다. 『화엄경소』는 8권 혹은 10권으로 이루어져 있었지만, 현재 확인할 수 있는 것은 서문을 비롯하여, 제3권 일부분에 해당하는 「여래광명각품(如來光明覺品)」 주석 부분, 그리고 다른 주석가들의 화엄 관련 저서에 인용된 4교판(敎判)설 등이다. 이에 따라 학계에서는 『화엄경소』에 등장하는 단편적 문구를 토대로 원효의 화엄사상을 연구해 왔지만, 그 근간이 되는 『화엄경소』 자체에 대한 연구는 아직 행해진 바가 없었다. 본고에서는 각각의 내용을 유기적으로 해석해 보고 특징을 찾아보고자 하였다. 그 결과 원효는 수행자를 중심으로 하는 관점에서 『화엄경』을 해석하고 있었다는 특징을 도출하였다. 서문에서 수행자가 성불(成佛)하게 되는 원리, 「여래광명각품」 주석에서 수행자가 덕(德)을 갖추게 되는 원리, 4교판설에서 수행자가 최종적으로 도달해야 하는 목표 지점 등의 내용을 통해 보면, 원효는 철저히 수행자의 관점에서 『화엄경』을 해석하고 있었다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the contents and characteristics of the Avatamsaka Sutra Commentary (華嚴經疏), which has been handed down as a collection of fragments among the writings of Bunhwang Wonhyo (芬皇 元曉, 617-686). The Avatamsaka Sutra Commentary consisted of a total of 8 or 10 volumes, but what is currently available is the preface, the commentary on Awakening by Tathagata Light Chapter (如來光明覺品) which is part of the third volume, and the theory of the Four Teachings (四敎判). Accordingly, the academic world has been studying Wonhyo's Avatamsaka Thought based on fragmentary phrases appearing in the Avatamsaka Sutra Commentary , but no research has yet been conducted on the Avatamsaka Sutra Commentary, itself, which is the basis of it. This paper tried to organically interpret each content and find its characteristics. As a result, the characteristic was derived that Wonhyo was interpreting the Avatamsaka Sutra from a practitioner-centered perspective. Looking at the principles of a practitioner's becoming Buddha in the preface, the principle of a practitioner's attainment of virtue in the commentary to Awakening by Tathagata Light Chapter, and the goal point that a practitioner must ultimately reach in the Four Teachings, it can be said that Wonhyo was thoroughly interpreting the Avatamsaka Sutra from the perspective of a practitioner.
