극본, 노래, 춤 등 매우 다양한 요소들이 혼합된 종합 예술인 뮤지컬 번역은 일반적인 텍스트의 이차원적 번역과는 다른 양상을 보인다. 공연예술 중에서도 상업적 의존도가 매우 높은 뮤지컬의 특수한 사정은 번역 과정에 연출가, 작가, 작곡가 등 창작진과 제작자 및 관객 등 다양한 주체의 개입을 허용하게 되는데, 이로 인해 번역 과정에서 다양한 방식의 변수가 발생할 가능성이 높아지고, 번역 결과물 역시 공연 과정에서 혹은 재연을 위해서 변경될 수 있다. 즉, 뮤지컬 번역 과정은 획일화되거나 표준화될 수 없고 번역 결과물 역시 불변의 고정된 것이 아니다. 뮤지컬 번역이 지닌 이러한 특수성을 고려하여 이 논문에서는 가창용이성의 관점에서 단순화된 Frazon 모델을 적용하여 오스트리아 마지막 황후 엘리자베트의 일대기를 다룬 <엘리자벳>의 ST와 TT의 관계를 분석해 본다. 본고에서는 음운적, 시적-구조적, 의미적 차원에서 구축된 가사 분석 틀에 기반하여 <엘리자벳>의 주요 넘버 네 곡의 음절 수, 리듬, 각운, 반복 텍스트 부분, 핵심어 위치, 의미적 정보성 등 번역 양상을 비교 분석해 보았다. TT에서는 가창용이성의 결정적인 요소라고 할 수 있는 음절 수는 ST와 거의 일치한다. 다시 말하면, TT는 ST의 언어유희, 각운 등을 포기하는 대신, 관객들이 자연스럽게 받아들일 수 있는 의미적, 시적-구조적, 음운적 차원 등 다양한 변형 방식으로 현지화를 꾀하고, 이를 통해 목표 관객에게 전달력을 높이는 것에 방점을 둔 것이다. 라이선스 뮤지컬 분야의 수요와 공급의 증가와 맞물려 뮤지컬 분야의 전문 번역가의 수요 또한 높아지고 있는 현재 이 논문에서의 논의는 뮤지컬 번역의 전문화와 고도화에 한 방향성을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대해 본다.

Crafting a melodically adept translation presents a formidable challenge, primarily owing to the imperative of seamless synergy between the text and musical accompaniment. This challenge is exacerbated when transposing German musical compositions into Korean, given the profound divergences in linguistic structures, encompassing disparate syntactic arrangements and distinct metrical and stress patterns. This analysis provides a compact overview of the intricacies associated with singability and scrutinizes the Korean version of the German lyrics from 'Elisabeth - Das Musical,' as performed in Korea. The pivotal musical compositions underwent meticulous analysis, revealing challenges that include strategic syllabic adjustments for better singability (minimizing the insertion or omission of syllables), deliberate compromises on the poetic plane, such as rhyme patterns, metaphors, and repetitions, all made to convey the core thematic content. The proficient transmission of the original musical composition is undeniably one of the important factors for the success of the Korean production.
