본고는 『표준국어대사전』의 용례를 공공언어의 요건 중 공공성의 측면에서 검토함으로써 사전 용례의 공공성을 개선하기 위하여 논의가 필요한 기초적인 문제들을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 『표준국어대사전』의 언어는 사회 구성원 누구나 접근 가능한 공공성을 띤 언어이므로 ‘공공언어’라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 공공언어가 갖추어야 할 요건 중 ‘공공성’의 측면에서 『표준국어대사전』의 용례를 검토하였다. 그 결과, 사회 변화에 따라 차별적 표현으로 인식되는 내용이 포함된 용례, 장애나 질병과 관련된 차별적 표현이 포함된 용례, 외모와 관련된 차별적 표현이 포함된 용례, 비속어 표현이 포함된 용례 등이 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 이에 따라 『표준국어대사전』 용례의 공공성 개선을 위한 사전 개편 시 고려가 필요한 문제들을 논의하였다. 첫째, 현재 편찬 지침에 따르면 『표준국어대사전』에 등재될 수 있는 인용례 출전의 범위가 매우 제한적이기 때문에 공공성이 낮은 용례가 인용되기 쉬울 수밖에 없음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 차별적 표현, 비속어 표현 등의 표제어성에 대하여 사전에 표제어로 등재하되 그 표제어가 부적절한 표현임을 알 수 있게 하는 정보를 부기하는 방안이 있을 수 있음을 제시하였다. 셋째, 만일 출전에서 발견된 가장 전형적인 용례가 공공성의 측면에서 부적절하다면 되도록 부적절한 표현을 수정·삭제하여 작성례로 제시하는 방안이 가장 합리적일 수 있음을 제안하였다. 넷째, 기존의 용례는 어휘 용법의 변화상을 보여 준다는 점에서 그대로 살려 두되, 최신화한 인용례 출전의 목록으로부터 최근의 용례를 추가함으로써 기존 용례의 공공성 문제를 해소할 수 있다고 보았다.

The purpose of this paper is to present basic issues that need discussion and suggest solutions to improve the communicability of dictionary usage examples by reviewing inappropriate items among usage examples in Pyojun Korean Dictionary. Usage examples judged to be inappropriate in terms of communicability were broadly divided into cases containing discriminatory expressions and cases containing slang. Meanwhile, three topics for discussion were presented to establish the direction for reorganizing examples of Pyojun Korean Dictionary. First, as to why this type of inappropriate example is included in the Pyojun Korean Dictionary, it is explained that because the scope of an example of a quote that can be listed in the Pyojun Korean Dictionary is very limited, examples containing inappropriate expressions are likely to be cited. Second, regarding the issue of whether discriminatory expressions, slang, etc. should be listed as headwords in the Pyojun Korean Dictionary, it was suggested that there may be a way to register them as headwords in the dictionary but add information that allows you to know that the headword is an inappropriate expression. Third, if the most typical example showing the use of a headword contains an inappropriate expression, the issue is how to handle the an example of a quote. If possible, the example containing the inappropriate expression should be modified and presented as an example of creation. It was suggested that this method may be the most reasonable.
