본 연구는 전쟁의 시대별 전쟁 양상에 대한 변화를 분석해 봄으로써 앞으로 우리의 적절한 대응태세를 유지하기 위한 다양한 군사적 위협과 더불어 새로운 형태의 비군사적 위협이 끊임없이 등장함을 살펴보고 또 다른 전쟁양상으로 변모시킬 것임을 인식해야 한다는 것이다. 전쟁양상은 대체로 다음의 다섯 단계를 거쳐 발전되어 왔다고 볼 수 있는데 첫째, 원시 및 고대의 전쟁으로 단순한 『무제한전쟁 단계』, 둘째, 중세 및 근대 초기의 직업군대 전쟁으로 『제한전쟁 단계』, 셋째, 프랑스혁명 이후의 국민전쟁으로 주관적 『무제한전쟁 단계』, 넷째, 산업혁명 이후의 제국주의전쟁으로 『객관적 무제한전쟁 단계』, 다섯째, 현대의 총력전으로 『주관적 객관적 무제한전쟁 단계』, 이렇게 시대별 전쟁 양상은 이렇게 국가의 일부 계층이나 정치집단 일부의 이익보호를 위한 제한된 목적에서 국민전체의 생존과 국가 전체의 번영을 도모하는 형태로 변모되어 왔음을 알 수 있다. 특히 20세기 중반 이후에는 핵무기와 같은 절대무기의 등장으로 무기체계의 파괴력이 극대화됨으로써 단순한 정치목적 달성이라는 전쟁 본래의 의도는 다소 변질될 수밖에 없게 되었고 전쟁의 양상 또한 과거와는 크게 다른 형태로 변하게 되었다. 이러한 관점을 기반하여 무기체계의 획기적 발전에 따른 고대전쟁에서부터 미래전쟁까지의 전쟁양상 변화를 시대적 관점으로 구분하여 중점적으로 살펴보고 이에 대한 함의를 고찰하고자 한다.

By analyzing changes in war patterns by era, this study should recognize that new types of non-military threats will constantly emerge along with various military threats to maintain our appropriate response in the future and transform them into another war pattern. The war pattern has been developed through the following five stages. First, it is a primitive and ancient war, a simple, unrestricted war stage, a medieval and early modern occupational war, and third, a subjective and unrestricted war stage after the French Revolution. Fourth, an imperialist war after the Industrial Revolution, and a modern war. In particular, after the mid-20th century, the destructive power of the weapon system was maximized by the emergence of absolute weapons such as nuclear weapons, and the original intention of the war to achieve simple political purposes was changed somewhat, and the aspect of the war also changed greatly from the past Based on this point of view, I would like to focus on the changes in war patterns from ancient wars to future wars due to the breakthrough development of the weapon system and draw conclusions on this.
