백선엽장군에 대한 평가는 다양하다. 그러나 다부동 전투에서 사단장으로서 그가 보여준 전장 리더십은 우리에게 많은 교훈을 주고 있다.
낙동강 방어선에서의 다부동은 제1차세계 대전시 베르당 전투에 비견되는 매우 중요한 전투였다. 다부동에서 백선엽장군이 지휘하는 국군 제1사단에 적은 전차사단이 포함된 4개사단 이상의 부대를 집중하여 10:1의 압도적으로 우세한 전투력을 집중하였다. 다부동 방어선이 붕괴되면 낙동강 방어선 유지가 어려워지고 결국 국가의 존립이 위태로워지는 상황이었다. 그는 국가의 운명을 한 몸에 짊어진 것 같은 중압감 속에서도 침착함과 담대함을 유지한 채 직접 솔선수범을 보이면서 부하를 설득하고 배려하면서 임무를 완수하였다. 아울러 리더십은 조직의 내부로 지향되는 것뿐만 아니라 대외적으로도 영향을 미쳐 공공의 이익을 달성해가는 것이라는 관점에서 백선엽 장군의 솔선수범이 6.25전쟁 초기 미군이 한국군 지휘관들에게 가졌던 불신을 해소하는 역할을 하였다는 것을 깊이 인식할 필요가 있다.
끝으로 클라우제비츠가 강조하였듯이 전쟁사 연구를 통하여 유능한 선배 지휘관들이 전장의 마찰요소를 극복하고 임무를 완수하기 위해 보여주었던 리더십을 연구하여 자신의 것으로 승화시키는 것이 현재 군을 이끌고 있는 모든 간부들의 의무라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
