임진왜란 발발 이후 430여 년이 지난 오늘날까지도 상대적으로 당시 일본 수군에 관한 연구는 미진한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구는 임진왜란에 참전한 일본 수군은 누구였으며, 이들은 어떻게 임진왜란에 참전하게 되었는지, 그리고 이들은 어떠한 수군 전술을 사용하였고, 그 배경은 무엇이었는지 일본 수군을 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 분석한 결과, 임진왜란 발발 시기인 16세기 일본은 실력 위주의 부국강병을 추구하는 전국시대였고, 이때 해상에는 일본 연해민과 중국인 다수 등이 다양하게 결합한 후기왜구가 등장하였다. 그러나 일본의 다이묘들이 제해권 확보를 위해 각 지역의 해적 등 해상세력을 흡수하였고, 특히 도요토미 히데요시가 전국을 통일하면서 이들은 정규 수군으로 임진왜란에 참전하게 되었다. 이들 해상세력은 전국시대 국내 전투에서도 해전이 아닌 군량, 인원, 무기 등의 보급품 수송 혹은 해로 봉쇄 등을 주 임무로 하였다. 이에 일본 수군은 임진왜란 초기 해전에서 제해권 확보에 목적을 두는 일반 정규 수군과 다른 특징을 보였던 것이다. 임진왜란 참전 일본 수군에 관해서는 국내에 아직 많은 연구가 축적되지 않은 분야이기에 본 연구가 향후 임진왜란 해전사 연구와 일본 수군 연구의 기초 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다.

Even after more than 430 years since the outbreak of the Imjin War, relatively inadequate research has been conducted on the Japanese Navy who participated in the war at that time. Therefore, this study analyzes the Japanese naval forces that participated in the Imjin War. It investigates who these naval forces were, how they became involved in the Imjin War, the naval tactics they employed, and the background surrounding their participation. According to the analysis through this study, Japan in the 16th century, when the Japanese Invasion of Korea broke out, was a nationwide era seeking power-oriented military power, and at this time, the late Japanese pirates, which combined variously with Japanese coastal people and a large number of Chinese, appeared in the sea. However, each of Japan's daimyo absorbed maritime forces such as pirates in each region to secure the right to the sea. And especially Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified the country, and maritime forces participated in the Imjin War as Japanese Naval Forces. During the Warring States period, their primary mission was not naval battles but rather the transportation of supplies such as provisions, personnel, and weapons, as well as conducting naval blockades. Therefore, they exhibited distinctively different characteristics compared to the regular naval forces, which had the primary goal of securing maritime control in the early stages of the Imjin War. Since there is still a lack of research on the Japanese naval forces participating in the Imjin War in domestic studies, this study is expected to serve as basic data for the study of naval history and the study of the Japanese naval forces during the Imjin War.
