This paper analyzes the Chronicle compiled by a Benedictine monk Sigebert of Gembloux (c. 1030~1112) by examining its rich accounts of numerous peculiar natural phenomena, particularly pertaining to the Carolingian Empire era. In his compilation of historical narratives, Sigebert weaves together political incidents and natural catastrophes, implying political interpretations of history. Notably, he emphasizes natural disasters such as the blood rain, locust swarms, and famine in 873 as natural omens foreshadowing a significant political transition: the transfer of the imperium to the East Frankish kingdom. Adhering to the medieval monastic religious tradition, Sigebert explicitly presents his political interpretations of various historical events. While medieval monastic historians typically attribute natural calamities and human disasters, such as the Carolingian Civil War and Viking raids, to divine retribution in their historical works, Sigebert extraordinarily infuses his accounts with political insights. Thus, he intertwines human and natural histories within a broader perspective of imperial history. The way in which he intertwines natural phenomena with historical events carries significant political implications, reinforcing the legitimacy of the East Frankish kingdom, and by extension, that of the Salian dynasty.
