본 논문에서는 현종대 숙박 시설을 갖춘 사찰이 등장한 배경과 의미를 광연통화원의 사례를 통해 논하였다. 본고에서는 그동안 홍경사를 논한 선행연구를 참조하면서 크게 2가지 문제를 풀어보고자 하였다. 첫째, 「봉선홍경사기」의 내용 중 亭과 客館을 중점적으로 분석하여 홍경사의 부속 시설인 객관 광연통화원의 논의를 진행하기 위한 단서를 찾고자 하였다. 둘째, 현종이 광연통화원을 지은 이유와 그것의 기능을 논하였다. 첫 번째 문제를 해결하는 데 있어 고려시대 사료에서 정과 객관의 용례를 정리하였다. 이를 토대로 「봉선홍경사기」에 나온 정과 객관의 관계를 서술하고, 사원의 서쪽에 세운 객관 광연통화원의 역할이 무엇인지 정리해보았다. 그 결과 정은 여관을 가리키는 표현으로 보는 것이 타당하다. 그리고 객관은 고려시대 기록 중 객관의 명칭을 ‘○○정’이라 한 사례와 비교하여 양자의 차이를 서술하였다. 이에 더하여 지방 관아에 세운 客舍를 객관이라 부른 용례가 있는 점을 참고하여 王人도 객관 광연통화원을 이용했을 가능성을 제시해보았다. 두 번째 문제에 대한 해답은 현종의 지방 통치력 강화와 왕인의 연관성을 통해 제시하였다. 현종은 지방의 통치력을 강화하기 위해 지방제를 개편하였다. 현종 9년(1018)에 주현·속현제도를 마련하였고, 이후에 鄕職制·驛制도 개편하였다. 이렇듯 현종이 지방에 대한 통제력을 강화하기 시작하면서 왕명을 지방 관아로 전달해야 할 일이 많아졌다. 이는 왕인이 맡은 업무의 중요성이 증가했음을 의미한다. 따라서 현종은 중앙의 명령을 지방으로 전달하기 위한 효율적인 방법을 찾아야 했다. 이에 현종은 광연통화원을 세워 왕인의 숙식을 책임지게 한 것으로 보인다. 아울러 고려시대 숙박 시설을 갖춘 사찰이 현종대에 와서야 지어질 수 있었던 이유도 조명해 보았다. 이는 중앙조정이 지방에 대한 지배력을 확보한 때가 현종대였기 때문으로 보인다.

In this paper, the background and meaning of King Hyeonjong’s construction of a temple equipped with accommodation facilities were discussed through the case of Gwangyeontonghwawon. First the usage examples of pavilion and inn in Bongseonhonggyeongsagi were analyzed. This was connected to the inn ‘Gwangyeontonghwawon’, an accessory facility of Honggyeongsa. Second the reason why Hyeonjong created the Gwangyeontonghwawon and its function were discussed. In solving the first problem, examples of pavilions and inn in Goryeo dynasty historical records were summarized. Based on this, the relationship between pavilion and inn in BongseonHonggyeongsagi was described, and the role of Gwangyeontonghwawon established in the west of the temple was summarized. As a result It seems that envoy may have used the facility. The answer to the second problem can only be found by linking envoy with the strengthening of local governance of the King Hyeonjong. Hyeonjong reorganized the local system to strengthen the local governance. As Hyeonjong began to strengthen his control over the provinces, there was more work to convey the king’s orders to the local government. This means that the importance of the task of envoy has increased. Therefore Hyeonjong had to find an efficient way to deliver orders from the center to the provinces. Accordingly it seems that Hyeonjong established the Gwangyeontonghwawon to be responsible for envoy’s accommodation and board.
