본 연구는 경북지역에서 높이 평가받고 있는 퇴계 선생 설화의 전승양상을 살펴보고, 같은 지역에 전승되는 공민왕 설화와 비교하여 의미를 찾아보고자 한다. 퇴계 선생 설화의 전승양상을 살펴보면, 異人의 모습과 인간적이고 본성적인 모습, 도학자로서의 모습으로 부각되어 나타나고 있다. 특히 경북지역에서는 도학자의 모습이 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 퇴계 선생의 학문과 밀접한 관련을 지니는 경북지역에서 이러한 면모가 두드러지는 것은 당연한 일이지만, 한편으로는 부정적인 평가를 보이는 설화들도 있다. 특히 퇴계 선생 관련 설화의 경우 퇴계 선생 외에, 지역의 대표적 인물 전설인 공민왕 전설이 함께 전승된다는 특징을 지닌다. 도학자의 인물과 역사적 인물이 함께 전승되는 지역의 경우 인물 전설의 다양한 면모를 확인해 볼 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 인물에 대한 평가 역시 설화를 전승하는 전승자들의 사회·문화적인 요소가 큰 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 널리 알려진 인물의 인물전설이 한 지역에서 함께 전승될 때 설화 구연자들의 전승 의식을 살펴보아, 공동체 또는 지역문화를 어떻게 형성해 나가는지를 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 전승 의식에 담겨진 설화 구연자들의 인물에 대한 평가는 인물전설의 전승 연행의 맥락을 이해할 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.

This study aims to examine the transmission patterns of Toegye's folktales, which are highly regarded in the Gyeongbuk region, and to find meaning by comparing them with the folktales of King Gongmin passed down in the same region. Looking at the transmission patterns of Toegye's folktales, they emerge as a distinguished character, human and natural, and Taoist figures. In particular, in the Gyeongbuk region, the appearance of a Taoist is prominent. It is natural that this aspect stands out in the Gyeongbuk region, which is closely related to Toegye's studies, but on the other hand, there are folktales that show negative evaluations. In particular, in areas that show a negative evaluation of Toegye, the legend of King Gongmin, a representative character legend in the region, is passed down together in addition to Toegye. In areas where both the figures of the scholar and the historical figures are passed down, it is important in that it is possible to confirm various aspects of the character legend. In addition, it can be seen that the social and cultural factors of the successors who pass on the folktales have a great influence on the evaluation of the characters. Therefore, it is possible to examine the transmission consciousness of the folktales to see how they form a community or local culture when the person legend of a widely known character is passed down together in one area. Additionally, the character evaluation of the folktales contained in the transmission consciousness is significant in that it is possible to comprehend the context of the character legend's transmission performance.
