본 연구에서는 영화 위대한 개츠비에 드러난 공간과 공간에 드러난 인테리어의 및 아르데코 스타일의 표현양상을 분석함으로써, 위대한 개츠비 영화의 공간에서 실내 디자인이 어떤 상징적 의미를 전달하고 있는지를 분석 해보고자 하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 방법으로 진행되었다. 먼저 인물과 공간을 연계하여 분석하기 위해 위대한 개츠비의 내용에 대해 간단한 고찰을 진행하였으며 영화와 시각적 요소를 중심으로 분석한 선행연구들을 고찰함으로써 분석방법을 수립하기위한 바탕으로 삼았다. 이어 아르데코 스타일에 대해 선행연구를 고찰함으로써 각각의 공간에서 아르데코 스타일의 표현을 분석할 수 있는 기준을 세웠다. 공간분석의 대상은 주요 인물인 개츠비, 부캐넌 부부(톰과 데이지), 닉, 그리고 톰의 밀애 상대인 머틀이 사용하는 공간을 대상으로 하였다. 분석 방법은 선행연구를 각 인물이 사용하는 공간을 캡처한 뒤, 해당 공간의 특징 및 아르데코 스타일이 어떠한 아이템으로 활용되고 있는지를 중심으로 분석하였다. 선행연구 고찰 결과 색채는 상징성을 부여할 수 있는 주요한 시각적 요소이므로 공간의 색채에 대한 분석도 함께 진행하였다. 이를 통해 본 영화에서는 아르데코 스타일의 공간 적용을 일종의 상징으로서 활용하고 있음을 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, 본 영화에서의 아르데코 스타일은 단순한 실내 장식으로서 뿐 아니라 덧없는 유행, 텅 빈 내면을 반영하는 요소로 사용되었음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 값비싼 소재의 아르데코 가구와 실내장식은 호화로움을 누릴 수 있는 부와 지위를 상징한다고 볼 수 있다. 패션 혹은 색채 중심의 분석이 주를 이루던 기존의 영화 분석에서 인테리어 스타일을 시대적 특성과 연계하여 영화속에 숨어있는 상징성을 분석해냈다는 데 의의가 있다 하겠다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the symbolic meaning of interior design in the space of the great Gatsby movie by analyzing the interior and the art deco-style expression revealed in the space and space revealed in the movie The Great Gatsby. This study was conducted in the following way. First, in order to analyze the great person and space, a brief review was conducted on the contents of the great Gatsby, and it was used as the basis for establishing an analysis method by examining previous studies analyzed focusing on movies and visual elements. Subsequently, by considering previous studies on the art deco style, the standard for analyzing the expression of the art deco style in each space was established. The subject of spatial analysis was the space used by the main characters Gatsby, Buchanan couple (Tom and Daisy), Nick, and Tom's secret partner Myrtle. The analysis method captured the space used by each person, and then analyzed the characteristics of the space and what items the art deco style was used for. As a result of the review of previous studies, color is a major visual element that can give symbolism, so an analysis of the color of space was also conducted. Through this, it can be seen that the application of the Ardeco-style space is used as a kind of symbol in this movie. First, it can be seen that the art deco style in this movie was used not only as an interior decoration but also as an element that reflects the ephemeral trend and empty inner side. Second, expensive art decoration furniture and interior decoration can be seen as symbolizing wealth and status to enjoy luxury. It is meaningful that existing film analysis, which was mainly focused on fashion or color-oriented analysis, analyzed the symbolism hidden in the film by linking interior styles with the characteristics of the times.
