이 연구의 목적은 최근에 새로운 유형의 사회적 위험이자 취약성으로 공감대를 확산해 온 사회적 고립(social isolation)이 코로나19 확산으로 인한 팬데믹(pandemic) 위기를 기점으로 어떻게 변화해왔는지 그 역동을 실증 분석하는 데에 있다. 통계청의 2013년~2021년 「사회조사」마이크로데이터를 활용해 팬데믹 위기에서 사회적 고립의 양상과 사람들의 삶에 미치는 사회적 고립의 내재적인 요인의 영향이 어떻게 변화했는지 분석하였다. 결과를 종합하면, 첫째, 사회적 고립의 두 핵심 요소 중 사회적 지지체계가 팬데믹에 더 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 팬데믹 시기에 온라인을 포함한 사회적 교류는 다소 증가한것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 사회적 고립이 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향은 집단별로 차이가 나타났다. 사회적 고립은 전체 인구와 경제활동 인구의 삶의 만족에 부적인 영향을 미쳤으나, 청년에게는 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 넷째, 청년 집단에서는 팬데믹 시기 사회적 교류의 결핍이 삶의 만족에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 팬데믹 위기와 사회적 고립의 총효과는 삶의 만족으로 측정한 총체적인 삶에 부적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 결과를 바탕으로, 사회적 고립에 대응하는 사회보장 정책의 필요성과 함께 인구 집단별 이질성을 고려할 필요를 제언하였다.

This study aims to explore the dynamics of social isolation as a new type of social risk and vulnerability, specifically how it has changed amid the pandemic crisis. The empirical analysis utilized microdata from the 2013-2021 Social Survey produced by Statistics Korea. The analysis results indicate that social support is more vulnerable to the pandemic than the other core component of social isolation, social interaction. Additionally, social interaction, including online communication, has somewhat increased during the pandemic. Third, the impact of social isolation on life satisfaction varied by population groups, with a negative impact on life satisfaction for the total population and in-work population, but no significant impact for young adults. Fourth, the study found that the absence of social interaction had a negative impact on life satisfaction among young adults in the pandemic crisis. Fifth, the research showed that the gross effect of the pandemic crisis and social isolation negatively affects overall well-being, as measured by life satisfaction. Based on these results, we suggest the need for social security policies to address social isolation, while taking into account heterogeneity across population groups.
