중세 문헌에서 ‘冶다’는 ‘꾸미다, 치장하다’라는 의미로 사용되었고, ‘野다’는 ‘비속하다, 천하다’라는 의미로 사용되었다. 이 시기의 이 두 단어는 언해과정에서 등장한 것으로 보이며 일상생활에서 사용하던 일반적인 단어는 아니었던 것으로 보인다. 이후 이 두 단어는 몇몇 문헌에서 간간이 사용되다가 20세기에 들어서 여러 자료에서 활발하게 사용되는 양상을 보인다. 20세기 자료에서는 무늬가 화려하거나 원색 계통으로 색상이 강렬한 느낌을 줄 때 주로 ‘야하다’를 사용하였는데, 이는 ‘冶다’의 의미가 발전한 것으로, ‘천하게 아리땁다’라는 의미를 나타낸다. 비슷한 시기에 상스럽고 비속한 말을 ‘야한 말’이라고 하였는데, 이는 ‘비속하다, 천하다’라는 ‘野다’의 의미와 연결된다. 이후 1970년대에 이르러 ‘야하다’가 선정적이라는 의미를 나타내게 되는데, 이러한 의미가 지금은 거의 ‘야하다’의 기본 의미로 통하고 있다. 이 의미는 ‘冶하다’의 ‘천하고 아리땁다’라는 의미가 변한 것으로, 화려한 무늬나 강렬한 색상에 사용하던 ‘冶하다’가 노출이 심한 옷 등에 사용이 되면서 선정적이라는 의미를 획득하게 된 것으로 보인다. 현대의 국어사전들은 대개 ‘冶하다’와 ‘野하다’를 동음이의어로 처리하고 있으나 대부분의 사람들은 이 두 단어의 의미를 생소하게 여기며, ‘천하고 아리땁다’라는 ‘冶하다’의 의미가 변하여 나타나게 된 ‘성적인 호기심을 자극하는 힘이 있다’라는 의미만을 익숙하게 생각하는 편이다.

Modern Korean dictionaries usually treat ‘冶hada’ and ‘野hada’ as synonyms, but most people find the meaning of these two words unfamiliar, and they are familiar with the meaning of ‘selective’ developed from the meaning of ‘low and beautiful.’
