발칸반도에 위치한 세르비아와 코소보는 과거부터 다양한 역사·민족·종교적 배경을 바탕으로 끊임없이 분쟁이 일어나는 곳이다. 코소보 분쟁은 세르비아의 자치주였던 코소보의 독립을 주장하는 알바니아계와 이를 반대하는 세르비아계 사이의 갈등으로 특히 1990년대 유고슬라비아의 붕괴 이후 그 갈등이 격화되었다. 인종청소를 동반한 세르비아의 탄압과 억압 속에서 코소보는 무장세력을 결성하여 이에 대응하였고, 국가 내부적으로 해결되지 않자 미국·러시아 등의 국제사회가 개입하여 이를 중재하고자 하였다. 결국 1999년 코소보 전쟁이 발발하였고 그 결과 코소보 평화협정을 맺으면서 양측간의 갈등을 일시적으로 잠재울 수 있었다. 하지만, 2008년 코소보의 일방적인 독립선언으로 분쟁의 불씨가 재점화되었고 최근까지도 지속되고 있는 분쟁으로 인해 군사적 긴장감과 불안을 높이고 있다. 코소보 분쟁이 국제사회에 미치는 영향을 고려할 때, 분쟁해결을 위해서 세르비아-코소보 뿐만 아니라 국제사회의 관심과 노력이 병행되어야 한다.

Serbia and Kosovo, located on the Balkan Peninsula, have been a constant source of conflict due to their complex historical, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The Kosovo conflict, in particular, intensified after the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s when Kosovo, which had previously enjoyed autonomous status within Serbia, saw tension rise between the Albanian-majority popluation advocating for independence and the Serbian minority opposing it. Amidst Serbian repression and oppression, including instances of ethnic cleansing, Kosovo saw the emergence of armed resistance groups. When internal resolution efforts failed, the international community, including the United States and Russia, sought to mediate the conflict. Ultimately, in 1999, the Kosovo War erupted, leading to the Kosovo Peace Agreement, which temporarily quelled the conflict. However, in 2008, Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence reignited the sparks of conflict, leading to ongoing tensions and insecurity. The Kosovo conflict has heightened military tensions and unease, causing concerns. Considering the impact of the kosovo conflict on the international community, it is crucial to recognize that its resolution requires parallel efforts from not only Serbia and Kosovo but also the international community’s atetention and commitment.
